I wish that someone would tell me where all this 'cheap alcohol' is. I hardly ever enter a pub because of the prices - not even for a meal. In the supermarkets, I struggle to spot anything cheap which is drinkable. The cheap and nasty booze is usually of a low alcohol content.
I am a very moderate drinker and I often go without because of the current prices.

The trouble is that I come from one section of the population which neither abuses alcohol nor spends silly money on it.

The other section of our nation 'wants to get blasted' and will pay to do so.

What these 'experts' will do is 'hit the innocent to get at the guilty' - and in the end, the social problems will not diminish by one iota. Indeed, they may even worsen. Households containing 'the reckless' will have less disposable income for the things which matter.
Can they cut alcohol consumption by pricing tactics? - Yes, of course. But not in the groups where this would be most desirable!

OLDEST WHOLE FOSSIL TREE FOUND, as reported in New Scientist, 18 April 2007, p17, news@nature, Nature, vol 446, p904, 19 April 2007 and BBC News Online 19 April 2007. Palaeontologists have found an eight metre specimen of fossil tree that had been previously known only from its trunk and its crown in separate pieces. The tree, named "Eospermatopteris" has been known from a large number of fossil stumps found in the 1870’s in a rock quarry at Gilboa in New York State. Specimens of the crown of the tree have also been found previously but had been classified as a separate plant named "Wattieza", rather that the tops of "Eospermatopteris" plants. The new specimen has the crown attached to the trunk so palaeontologists can see the structure of the whole tree. Reconstructing fossil trees is not always easy, according to palaeontologist Brigitte Meyer-Berthaud, a palaeontologist at the Agricultural Research Centre for International Development in Montpellier, France, because the aerial portions of trees are often broken off and transported away. She commented: "We can find many different parts of the tree, but generally they are not connected." The newly discovered tree is dated as being 385 million years old, and was similar in structure to tree ferns, cycads and palm trees, having a crown of fronds which they gradually shed and replaced as they grew, leaving a characteristic pattern on the trunk. The researchers commented in their article in Nature: "It is therefore interesting to see how instantly recognizable and, in a significant sense, ‘modern’ the tree-like architecture of Wattieza seems to be. The usually unmentioned fact that many of the original Gilboa trees were found as polystrate fossils is evidence of rapid burial and strata formation. The data that many of the trees have been broken up and the pieces carried way separately indicates the trees have been subject to destructive and large catastrophic forces involving moving water that was deep enough to cover the trees.

In the UK, it has been made extremely difficult to find out murder statistics and this is particularly so where further murders are committed by 'lifers' although the numbers are known to be very significant. At one point a senior Probation Officer who was retired claimed that the figures were 'about one a fortnight'.
When I was still a JP, I received figures showing that there were, at that point, 3,600 'lifers' in British prisons. I have long endeavoured to get an accurate statistic for the numbers of life sentences awarded annually and it must be somewhere between 500 and a thousand.

Research suggests that, “psychopaths are a stable proportion of any population, can be from any segment of society, may constitute a distinct taxonomical class forged by frequency-dependent natural selection, and that the muting of the social emotions is the proximate mechanism that enables psychopaths to pursue their self-centered goals without feeling the pangs of guilt. Sociopaths are more the products of adverse environmental experiences that affect autonomic nervous system and neurological development that may lead to physiological responses similar to those of psychopaths. Antisocial personality disorder is a legal/clinical label that may be applied to both psychopaths and sociopaths” (Walsh & Wu, 2008).

Tortoises & Finches - Bad Science Taught In Our Schools!

EXTINCT TORTOISES ALIVE claim scientists on Galapagos Islands, according to reports in BBC News 9 January 2012 and ABC News in Science 10 Jan 2012. The different shaped shells of the giant tortoises on the various Galapagos Islands is considered to be one of the observations that inspired Darwin to develop his theory of evolution. According to the BBC, “The animals are thought to have colonised the archipelago through floating from the shores of South America. Colonies on each island remained relatively isolated from each other, and so evolved in subtly different directions.” A giant tortoise named Chelonoidis elephantopus is known to have lived on the island of Floreana in the Galapagos Islands when Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835, but is believed to have died out soon after this. C. elephantopus had a distinctive saddleback shaped shell, while the tortoises on neighbouring islands had a dome shaped shell. Recently, scientists studying Galapagos tortoises around a site named Volcano Wolf on Isabella Island had noted what Gisella Caccone called a mystery: “you could find domed shells, you could find saddlebacks, and anything in between."

Now scientists conducting a new study of the DNA from a related species, C. becki, claim C. elephantopus could still be alive and breeding with other tortoises on Isabella Island. The researchers collected samples from 200 tortoises and found 84 of them had C. elephantopus DNA in their genomes. The scientists compared the DNA of living tortoises with museum specimens and claim "the newly sampled individuals can only be explained if one of their two parents were C. elephantopus." As 30 of the tortoises are less than15 years old, and the animals can live for over a century, the scientists suspect pure bred C. elephantopus parents could still be alive. Ryan Garrick, one the researchers commented: "If found, these purebred C. elephantopus individuals could constitute core founders of a captive breeding program directed towards resurrecting this species."

ED. COM. (John Mackay.) What a reminder that the definition of ‘species’ is really a human construct. The tortoises on Floreana Island did have a different shell shape, but it is proving to be simply a variation within kind, as evidenced by the finding of the varying shaped shells around Volcano Wolf. The theory that the tortoises arrived on the islands on floating rafts of vegetation is probably correct, but the original populations that colonised each island have not “evolved in subtly different directions”. Inbreeding within a limited gene pool has simply reinforced the characteristics that were already present in the original populations on each island. In Darwin’s day each group of island tortoises had little opportunity to breed with other tortoises as the Galapagos Islands were rarely visited by man, and tortoises (as opposed to turtles) do not cross seas easily. This meant that each subgroup had distinctive shell shapes and patterns, but were still of the same kind. This perpetuation of distinctive characteristics over generations happens in island populations of any animal where the gene pool in limited. Since then they have been carried all over the world on board ships, as well to other islands, and have happily interbred with others of their own kind, and no doubt improved the gene pool with some re-mixing.There is no need for a captive breeding programme as they are obviously breeding, and they don’t need resurrecting because they are not dead. They should be left in peace to do what comes naturally, not be kept in artificial captivity to prop up evolutionists’ stories. These are not the only creatures on the Galapagos Islands that are classified as different species but are really one kind. Recent research has confirmed the famous “Darwin’s finches” are really just variations within kind and provide no evidence for evolution. In a highly controversial judgment, the High Court has today ruled that it is “unlawful” for local town councils to begin their formal meetings with prayer.
Were I on any council, I would stand at the beginning of each meeting and simply say five words very loudly, "May God bless today's proceedings" prior to taking my seat.
The evildoers could then do their worst - which, let's be honest - could not be a great deal. And if this were turned into a big deal - then think of the bad publicity these folks would have to endure if they persecute you.
Although I have stood for Sheffield Council - though never with any expectation of, or desire for, election - this would make being a councillor 'just up my street'!
I fully recommend this tactic to ALL councillors who are truly Christian!

Open Europe has [recently] published a new briefing looking at the arguments for and against the EU’s continued involvement in regional spending via the structural funds in Britain and other member states. Between 2007 and 2013, Britain will pay in around £30bn to the EU’s so-called structural and cohesion funds, but get back just under £9bn. Under the present system, 70% of the UK’s contribution to the structural funds goes to other member states, 25% is redistributed within the same UK region in which the funds were raised, and only 5% is re-distributed between richer and poorer regions in the UK. Some of the poorest regions are short-changed by the funds in that they pay in more than they get out. For example, the West Midlands, which has the UK’s lowest disposable income per capita pays £3.55 for every £1 it gets back.

Under a complex provision in the Lisbon Treaty, the Government must decide before June 2014 whether a whole raft of EU police and justice laws, adopted before the Treaty took force, will continue to apply in the UK beyond December 2014.

Abolitionists who criticise Iraq for the high number of executions can hardly be listened to. They lack any perspective.

Those of us who support the death penalty in extreme cases can however, take an objective view.

More than 60 executions in 2012 so far is horrendous! It does not help when more than FIFTY crimes are capital - including Damaging Public Property. It also does not help that Iraqi justice is not exactly known for its fairness to the accused.
