I have never managed to get around the idea found amongst influential educationists - a species which has systematically undermined society - that a child 'possessing knowledge' is not the point of education; that' having a body of known facts' is not the point of education and the 'use of memory' is no significant part of education. [Try getting a child fluent in a language without them having a bank of wide-ranging vocabulary!]
To people outside education this sounds as absurd as it really is.
The book is now a little dated but "All must have prizes" by Melanie Phillips is an eye-opener for those who did not realise that the lunatics had already taken over the asylum and this is not merely an ongoing process.
