I want to see changed our approach to punishing
drivers who break speed limits. That somebody at 1am gains 3 points on their
licence for doing 45 in a 40 limit, on an empty dual carriageway, is total
lunacy.
That driver has broken the law and should be
fined.
Points should only be awarded for what we might call
'aggravated speeding'. Excess speeds; speeds that might be construed as having a
small element of danger; inappropriate speeds. But let's be honest, these are in
the minority.
Watching camera vans, lurking on a near empty M180
motorway, desperate to find somebody doing 76mph is ridiculous. Even more
ridiculous is that they contain the name 'safety' in their
title.
