– However important the supply of Israeli weapons may have been to the Galtieri
junta in the Falklands War, it was nothing to
the boost Argentine capabilities would have been given, had another vendor –
Britain – succeeded in concluding a massive arms sale just over a decade
earlier.
The
deal that Denis Healey as defence secretary pushed so hard to achieve (beyond
the limits of legality), would have rendered victory for the Falklands Task
Force impossible.
The
package, put together in the mid-Sixties, would have supplied two Sea Dart
frigates, nine Canberra bombers, two Oberon-class attack submarines, a nuclear
reactor and, most significantly, given subsequent events, a dozen Harrier GR1
V/STOL fighter-bombers.
Had
the Argentine navy possessed the latter aircraft, neither the Royal Navy nor the
RAF could have closed Stanley airport to fast jet operations. Confronted with
air strikes from two directions, the Task Force’s position would have been
tactically untenable.
The
deal was thwarted by pure chance. In 1967 a foot-and-mouth epidemic was
triggered by a batch of Argentine lamb that infected livestock near Oswestry.
Buenos Aires retaliated against the Ministry of Agriculture’s ban on Argentine
meat imports by cancelling the arms contract.
Despite
Healey’s efforts to strong-arm the Cabinet into breaking British and
international health legislation, Harold Wilson was persuaded (by Fred Peart,
the agriculture minister, and Sir Solly Zuckerman, the Cabinet scientific
adviser) to uphold the ban.
As
a result, although the sale of the Canberras went through and two Type 42
destroyers were eventually substituted for the frigates, the Task Force did not
have to face aircraft as capable as its own, operating at close range rather
than from the mainland.
An
Argentine pilot, shot down by a Sea Harrier, later lamented that things would
have been different had his own air force had an aircraft like that, little
realising that the big secret of the Falklands War was that they very nearly
did.

Can We Really Trust The Tories To Deliver?
The British treasury is willing to let EU migrants keep coming to the UK in return for single market access, but other ministries want to take a hard line, British newspaper The Sunday Times has reported.
“There’s a tussle going on here. The chief culprit is the chancellor [Philip Hammond]. He has taken the position that there are no red lines, that you’ve got to stay part of the market and it doesn’t matter what you give way on,” a source from Britain’s ruling Conservative party was quoted as saying on Sunday (28 August).

England Take Two to Nil Lead In ODI Series v Pakistan.
It is always interesting to note the differences between the Test squad and the ODI squad. There are fewer players than you would imagine who are shared between the two.
On Saturday, what we really learned was how many test 'quicks' are under threat from players in the ODI squad.
Clearly, Chris Woakes is now cemented into both, the lightning fast and accurate Mark Wood is a certainty for the tours of Bangladesh and India this autumn and the neglected Plunkett must now feature. This may well be very bad news for Steven Finn whose general form has been inadequate in the last year.
Stuart Broad may not be an automatic choice any longer.
Perhaps controversially, I am going to advocate not sending the aging Jimmy Anderson. His very special qualities for swinging a cricket ball are not going to work on the Indian sub-continent. As our only truly great swing bowler, everything must be done to extend his career as long as possible. Working himself into the ground on dusty pitches over months may well have a detrimental effect on him. Give him a rest!

I really do not know why
children are not taught logic in schools. (I sound like old Professor Kirk in
'The Lion ,The Witch and The Wardrobe').There is no logic in saying
that God is disproved by the existence of negatives - or even evil. Furthermore,
to disprove something is considerably harder than to prove
it.Terrible things could disprove a LOVING God, but not the existence of any God. The first idea is a non sequitur. (To be fair, one is logically entitled to ask whether there might be more than one God.)
There are two major points to the issue:-
Firstly, sin in the world is a logical consequence of freewill. We have minds and are clearly able to make choices for good or ill. However defined, sin is the issue. The Christian claim is that ALL bad things - even natural disasters - are the consequence of *sin. The outsider/seeker/atheist/agnostic cannot come to terms with this point from their existing position and therefore perceive this incorrectly as a weakness in the Christian argument. It is like arguing that there could not possibly be an Eiffel Tower. The person who has been to Paris is then at a considerable advantage over the non-believer who refuses to travel to find out.
Once 'in The Kingdom' the Christian knows a great deal more; principally and empirically, the goodness of God.
Secondly, there is the issue of God's promise "Seek and you will find." This clearly links to the 'Parisian argument'. Nobody has any right to claim the non-existence of God if they have not 'followed all the clues' first.How many people do you know who have honestly and openly sought God and NOT found Him?
* A quite full definition of sin might be - "Wrongdoing; rebellion against God and that which puts a barrier between Man and God."

both Town Council seats on offer, UKIP resumed majority control of Thanet
Council in the Northwood by election yesterday evening. The by election, caused
by the long awaited resignations of former Councillors Smith and Collins, brings
UKIP's tally to 29 of the 56 Council seats in Thanet Council, and they resume
majority control of their only District Council in the country.
Thanet District Council Leader Cllr Chris Wells commented: "In a

Money
is pouring into the research and development pipeline, with the aim of improving

getting to the market and nobody benefits.
If,
after Brexit, we get this right, companies will move here from the EU to develop
and test new devices with proper appraisal of risk and benefit, done with costs
realistic for business.
