British society has lost its moral compass in the wake of riots that prompted London’s mayor to order a statue of Winston Churchill to be boarded up, the war time leader’s grandson said on Friday.
Sir Nicholas Soames, a former Conservative minister, condemned the ‘unspeakable and cowardly’ actions of anarchists and far-left activists who had ‘hijacked’ the Black Lives Matter protest movement and defaced Churchill’s statue by daubing the word ‘racist’ on it.
Ahead of threatened counter-demonstrations by the far-right in central London on Saturday, Sir Nicholas said it was ‘absolutely repulsive’ that fascist groups were threatening ‘to stand guard’ over the Churchill statue in Parliament Square to protect the monument from further vandalism....
