Cricket in England is about to endure one of its occasional spasms of change, with the arrival on Wednesday of The Hundred. The arguments against this bastardisation of a once great game have been made repeatedly, and are powerful. The format may succeed, at least for a while: as the old saying goes, nobody ever lost money by underestimating the taste of the public – or rather, in this case, a certain section of the public that has spent its life immune to cricket’s charms.
