World Leprosy Day takes place on the last Sunday of January to help raise awareness of the ongoing impact of leprosy on some of the world's most vulnerable people.
This date was chosen in 1954 by humanitarian Raoul Follereau in tribute to the life of Mahatma Gandhi who shared a deep compassion for people impacted by the disease.For World Leprosy Day 2025 (Sunday 26 January), Lepra is shining a light on the grassroot community groups throughout India and Bangladesh, who are helping to detect cases and reduce the devastating impact of leprosy.
Through attending a community-based group, Astan recovered from the impact of leprosy. With support from Lepra's UPLIFT Project, he now helps countless people affected thanks to his leadership of a local federation. Read Astan's inspirational story.
