Okay:
1) Starmer appears to be always wrong.
2) His history of decision-making has been wretched.
3) He is muddle-headed.
4) Macron has diddled us out of hundreds of millions of pounds in past boat criminal deals.
BUT ... What if ...?
Let us assume that for the next 4,000 boat criminals that we take in, we take 4,000 legitimate asylum seekers too.
That's certainly a strain on the most overcrowded nation in the Western World but is not especially terrible.
But once this is underway, if 4,000 boat criminals are promptly returned to France - what deterrent message will that send to the people queuing for boats near Calais?
Judgement reserved!
Note:
How many migrants will be sent back to France?
Despite suggestions the scheme would return about 50 migrants a week to begin with, yesterday's announcement was far less clear on numbers. Officials said it would start on a small scale and slowly build up capacity.
Given that there have been 44,359 small-boat arrivals since Labour came to power, not including yesterday's arrivals, such a slim chance of being selected may encourage migrants to carry on regardless. Mail.
