I really do not like Amnesty - whether international or not.
Okay - they get it right sometimes with Burma and Tibet - but it would be difficult to be wrong always.
Time after time they manage unerringly to take the 'wrong' side in any situation where they become involved. Their support for the 'unworthy' is noted.

They really would be the first to whinge if a policeman who was armed were to shoot somebody during a violent arrest. But now they are standing up against tazers - which have lent some limited protection to officers when apprehending the violent without the need to kill them.
Would these appalling people care to attempt an arrest on somebody wielding a butchers' knife without realistic protection as my father once had to do in the days before such technology existed? - No. Rather thought not!
Yes, I know - their main aim is to abolish torture. Fine. But unfortunately, they seem to embrace every liberal left cause in the process.
Please do not give them any of your money.

Coffee anyone?

Not really within the normal realms of this Blog but if there are any coffee lovers out there, I have made an interesting discovery.

Positive discrimination is wrong!

I would think that this study is quite possibly true. As both described and predicted on this Blog, this is almost certainly a result of those twin evils - POSITIVE DISCRIMINATION and EQUALITY OF OUTCOME.

The former is a joke. If you discriminate in favour of one person in the workplace, common sense dictates that you must be discriminating against somebody else.

The latter is an impossibility as it means you must have a pre-determined outcome in mind - and who is to say that that will be just? The chances are slim.

In both cases, better people will be ditched, rejected, held back in their careers because they happen to be white - and the liberal left think that this is a good thing.

The only fair society is one based on MERIT! If this then results in all promotions going to non whites - then so be it!

The 'quota systems' for promotions, so loved in the Civil Service, is divisive and patently unfair. Similar systems clearly exist throughout other government agencies.

This MUST stop. The 'best person for the job' MUST be the sole criterion.

Bail abuse.

In 2006, almost 65,000 violent crime suspects were freed on bail, four out of every five arrested by police.
It is estimated that two murders a week are being committed by criminals released on bail.

The Ministry of Justice has admitted, following a request under freedom of information laws, that in January of this year, 13 per cent of defendants charged with murder were on bail, as were a startling 85 per cent of manslaughter suspects.

Courts are under increasing pressure to use bail because of chronic prison overcrowding. Only one in ten are immediately sent to jail. Almost half are let off with a fine, with the average amount just £61.07.
The man-of-Straw "defending" judges and magistrates said yesterday: 'These must be independent judicial decisions based on the law as it is, and they do so to a very high standard.'

HYPOCRITE! His government has interfered non stop with the independence of the Magistracy to my personal knowledge as a former JP. Most magistrates would happily jail bail bandits but the iniquitous 'guidelines' do not permit it!

Sell by dates.

Scientists have frequently claimed in recent years that our immune systems have been adversely affected by the insistence on total cleanliness and the overuse of bacterial cleansers in the home.

As children, our systems should get used to 'a bit of muck' and the immune system then kicks in at full power. Well, it makes sense to me.

If we extrapolate from this however, might there not be a similar claim made where sell by dates on food are concerned?

If we never eat anything which is a little bit 'on the turn', could this mean again that our immune systems are not firing on full power?

'Not guilty' does not necessarily mean 'innocent'.

Stephen Downing's conviction for the so-called Bakewell Tart murder was overturned but apparently he admitted to the crime after release.

The Guildford Four won their freedom on what many still believe to be a technicality - mainly that the notes of their interrogation were not "contemporaneous".

The Birmingham Six? The court of inquiry found that the evidence against them had been fabricated and their "confessions" beaten out of them - or so it is frequently claimed. "That's inaccurate - the Court found that SOME of the evidence against them was unreliable. Their convictions were 'unsafe' .... and as such they were freed." David Vance.

Barry George? An acceptable prosecution case which was just not strong enough and so the overturning of his conviction was correct. Had the result been made on "The balance of probabilities" which is so often the benchmark in civil cases then ....

Judith Ward had presented herself to the police and confessed to the 1974 coach bombing on the M62.

In a free society one must bend over backwards in criminal cases to be fair about convictions - and we do!

I make no comment about the guilt or innocence of the above but clearly not guilty verdicts and convictions overturned as 'unsafe' do not necessarily represent innocence and yet some are far too quick to equate the two.
In many such high profile cases the 'technicality' becomes the true bugbear.

Quakers.

I have just listened to a quaker on Radio Humberside stating that 'war solves nothing' and insisting that negotiation is always the way forward.
She was part of a group 'remembering the Japanese dead' in the first nuclear holocaust at Hiroshima.
Fine.
But where is the group remembering my uncle butchered by the Japanese?
Does she really believe that the imperialistic Japanese were prepared to negotiate in Manchuria and all of the other places they brutalised?

"Excuse me miss. I am going to rape you and give you over into a soldiers' brothel when I have finished.
If you object, I shall beat you to death with a rifle butt.
That is my stance. Incidentally miss, what is YOUR negotiating position?"

Being judgemental?

Christians are not permitted to be judgemental but neither are they meant to blind themselves to reality.
“How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:4 NIV) ...

This verse clearly refers to hypocrisy and reminds us too that we are all sinners.
Secondly, the subtext suggests that we must not consider ourselves to be better than others.

Even so the Scriptures require us to seek justice and to do so means that we must use our faculties to judge.

"He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:6– 6:8)
We must tread an extremely fine line.

The militant left, atheists and the terminal politically correct recognise this problem facing Christians and so whenever a Christian speaks out against a wrong, a cry goes up claiming that the Christian is being judgemental. It is such an easy attack and of course, sometimes their arrows will find a genuine target.
What all need to grasp is that such people attack anybody speaking out against things of which they might approve as 'being judgemental'. On the other hand however, in their turn, they are utterly 'judgemental' about matters which offend their philosophies. It is hypocrisy of the deepest hue, but then, they do not have to answer to God - or so they think!

Myra Hindley: a portrait of pure evil.

I remember The Moors Murders. I remember the genuine and deeply felt outrage which ran through our society when it realised that our political masters had wilfully abandoned the right, a matter of months before these appalling crimes came to light, to award punishments commensurate to the crimes committed.
Brady and Hindley were clearly the epitome of all evil. Their guilt was not an issue of 'beyond reasonable doubt' - but had been 100% established.
Nobody who had ever encountered their sick recordings of the voices of their victims being tortured was said ever to have been the same again - they were haunted for life by what they had heard.

When the death penalty was abolished, it was stated frequently that 'life would mean life in the future', yet in well under 20 years there were active campaigners, do-gooders in the very worst sense of the term, seeking the release of the appalling Hindley - but thanks to the sterling efforts of Michael Howard, this woman DID die in prison. It was equally likely that she could have been released!

A recent TV documentary showed how she manipulated all who surrounded her; she abused their trust; she lied, deceived and concealed. She claimed to have 'turned to the Church' at various points. Far be it from me to judge her on this matter - I am not permitted that - but against the backcloth of her prison behaviour, forgive me if I fail to see evidence of genuine remorse.

I do wonder if anybody who has tortured children to death for sexual gratification could ever be capable of embracing repentance. Only God knows the answer to that.

A study of the distinctions between sin and evil might prove useful for Christians. The two overlap of course, but are emphatically not the same thing.

Prison visitor Sarah Trevelyan was beguiled by her - if Hindley said it - then it was a fact. When Hindley finally admitted to her involvement in the murders, Trevelyan felt sick and confused. "I had this very good relationship with Myra, really, and I am very fond of her and truly supported her through all the years and had done a lot of work on this campaign for her to try and see that she would have a chance of being released. When this came to light I was just gutted…"

To make matters worse and to underpin the folly of not having executed her, fellow inmate Nikki Blake says, " Hindley wasn't treated as a normal prisoner: she was a special prisoner - a 'celeb con'. So she had special perks."

My anger is beyond limits!

She fooled prison officers, drawing a number into lesbian relationships; she enticed the Reverend Timms and the priest, Father Bert White into investigating ways which would permit her release and of course, we all know what a monkey she made out of the dotty Frank Packenham, Lord Longford, who seemed to believe that anything she stated had all the force of Holy Writ.

If they ever find anybody this evil in the future and want for a hangman - they only need give me a ring - and I won't even take a fee!

No to abuse: no to abuse of abuse!

For about three years I served on the Probation Liaison Committee in Sheffield, a group designed to facilitate good communications between the Probation Service and the local Magistracy.

In one such meeting, a probation officer was outlining a case and stated that the felon-in-question had been abused as a child.
I asked how she knew that this was the case. There was a pause, silence and eventually we were reluctantly told that the information had been given by the offender himself.

It was as if I had passed wind in a crowded lift!

Not being too easily embarrassed, I followed up to find out if this was the typical way that such information was gathered - and IT WAS!
I immediately realised that the vast majority of such claims are inevitably going to be false.
Unscrupulous lawyers will, as a matter of course, advise clients to make such claims; the streetwise will know to make them automatically.
The sickening thing here of course, is that the much smaller numbers of genuine cases are utterly devalued by their association with the many fakes.
This is the kind of world we inhabit today. Wild accusations can be made without a shred of evidence which typically will not be investigated but WILL all be believed. Which member of the judiciary would dare to challenge any such assertion?

Yet one more amongst the myriad ways in which our justice system is undermined.

Pakistan justice.

A Pakistani district court judge has upheld the alleged kidnapping and conversion of two Christian girls and the forced marriage of the older sister.

Human rights groups have swiftly condemned the decision and urged the international community to act, seeing it as part of a growing problem. Reports say Anila and Saba Masih (aged 10 and 13) were abducted in southern Punjab and forcibly converted to Islam.
However, the judge in Muzaffargarh dismissed their parents’ petition for their safe return.
He said they ‘converted in a legitimate manner’ and the marriage was also legitimate.
The Centre for Legal Aid, Assistance and Settlement (CLAAS) believes the abductors are part of a gang involved in trafficking and prostitution. ‘The abduction and forced conversion of Christian girls is becoming increasingly common,’ they say.

The failures of the left run long and deep. The greatest of political sins has been committed by labour politicians throughout the ages - I refer of course to terminal naivety.

Take Gordon Brown. [No - please do!] In his case a poor economist lauded as a towering, fiscal genius by his acolytes - virtually guaranteed to be the case with anyone from the left - is given charge of a thriving economy for which tories Lamont and Clarke had to take a great deal of the credit.

[You have NO idea how difficult I find it to be fair to Ken Clarke!]

Brown faces no world recessions and makes countless mistakes - easily located in lists on this Blog - and so gets away with it all relatively unscathed; taxing, bureaucratising and following expensive leftwing projects of dubious social value.
Clearly, the man had no overview whatsoever and built in no protective measures for when the hard times came - and come they did - but by this time he was Prime Minister, of course.
All of this can only be explained by a combination of dogma with a detachment from reality.
It was ever thus. Socialists will only ever see what they want to see. Consider Brown's long time predecessor, Sir Stafford Cripps in a rather different context.

Sir Stafford Cripps, British Ambassador in Moscow and later Labour Chancellor, announced in a filmed interview that the Soviet leader had no plans to communise the world: 'I have had it from the lips of Stalin himself.'

Kolpak nightmare.

Many people know of the intrusive European Court judgement wherein Bosman changed the face of football for ever, resulting in astronomical increases in entrance prices to football grounds and telephone number salaries for players, many of whom are placed in the ideal position to blackmail their hapless employers.
Fewer know of the other intrusive ECJ judgement on the 8th May 2003 which effectively wrecked our preparations for future England cricket teams:

"Correspondingly, a Kolpak player or Kolpak, is a term used in the United Kingdom for players in the domestic leagues in cricket and both rugby codes from overseas, subject to the Kolpak clause.
The court decision was based upon the idea that no resident of the European Union should be prevented from working in another part of the EU. Specifically the case meant that, in professional sports, if a sporting club chose a player who resided in the EU, then there could be no law preventing this. For example, a German basketball team could not be prevented from hiring a Greek player since both nations are members of the EU. Moreover, since Kolpak was not from the EU at the time the case was decided, but from a country that had an associate trading relationship, the decision meant that any player from any nation which had such a relationship with the EU could also freely play as a professional."

In simple terms, this means that a significant proportion of the world is entitled to come to this country and ply their trade. This is why many cricket counties have taken the short term solution to onfield woes and have brought in teamloads of Kolpak players, thus obstructing the development of considerable numbers of young cricketers who are qualified to play for England. [Congratulations to Glamorgan for refusing to play Kolpaks - I do hope that their resolve will be able to hold!]

That teams have a top foreign player or two to excite their fans is arguably helping to develop young players but in this instance, we are talking about journeyman professionals in large numbers whose benefit to the great game is minimal. We are the laughing stock of all the other test playing nations.

Thanks for this fiasco must be forwarded to the ECJ - but do not tell them that "It is just not cricket" as only Dutch members would have any chance of grasping the concept!

The lunacy of Liberal Democrat policies on youth crime are consolidating and - believe it or not - worsening!

We have aready been assailed by their madcap scheme to RAISE the age of criminal responsibility. Now they are trying to ensure that even FEWER young delinquents are locked up.
I despair.

They think that a gaping wound gushing the lifeblood of the nation may be cured with an elastoplast!
Add this to their undying support for the European Union, their belief that uncontrolled immigration is a good idea and it must be seen that they can never be allowed a vote from any normal person at any time this side of the distant future.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has equated gay sexual relationships to heterosexual marriage.
Leaked private letters from eight years ago reveal Rowan Williams's innermost thoughts on gay partnerships, which he says can 'reflect the love of God'.

Oh dear. There is only ONE way that this thinking can be adopted and that is if man's 'wisdom' is regarded as more important than that of the Scriptures.
The 'ordinary' Christian must love the sinner - there is no argument here.
It is however, most emphatically not the function of a senior churchman to reclassify a sin. Hypocrisy is the only conclusion which may be drawn.

I am afraid that the argument that 'there are some wonderful pockets of practising Christianity within the Anglican Communion' can no longer hold water.
The Anglican Church is fragmenting and it is right that it should.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The EU's €45 billion a year Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) may be causing thousands of heart disease and stroke-related deaths each year by promoting fatty foods, according to a new British study published by the World Health Organisation.
Direct subsidies to farmers have led to massive overproduction of milk and beef in Europe, with the excess food then disposed of "principally as fats hidden in processed foods," the University of Liverpool research, published in the latest WHO journal, says.
The EU spends some €16 billion a year alone promoting milk production, of which €500 million a year goes on boosting domestic butter consumption, it explains.
"CAP...may now have become a hazard to public health throughout the EU and may be promoting inequalities in health through the types of food consumed. This might controversially be described as 'a system designed to kill Europeans through CHD [Coronary Heart Disease]'."
