Obesity = Heart Disease - Or Does It?

Time and again I go to the Cardio-Vascular Department at the Northern General Hospital to have my INR tested.

As an overweight person - many may be astonished that my Q Risk reading is only 16%. (That means a mere 16% chance of developing heart disease before I am 75.)

Furthermore, whenever I look at the queues of people having blood tests taken - most of whom presumably have heart problems - one fact leaps out, time and again.

The majority of people - different faces each time - are of standard or slim build. Five years of observation has not changed that perception by a single jot.

I accept that there is a weight/diabetes link but refuse to accept that that is necessarily the case with heart disease.

With a sole exception, all those I know who have died of heart problems were slim.

I READ that there are moves afoot in Brussels towards the formation of a European defence force commanded totally from either Brussels or Paris. I ask your readers to just sit back and digest what is being proposed. Never before have we, in these islands, been sent in to battle on the whim of somebody of a different nation. If ever there was a dilution of one’s sovereignty, this must be it.

Trade Unions Against the EU was established to “smash the myth that Brussels represented social reform and protected jobs”. 

Despite being a Eurosceptic when he was on the backbenches, Mr Corbyn has fallen into line with Labour’s official position to stay in the EU regardless of what reforms David Cameron wins in his negotiations with Brussels. 

The group said it was in talks with the rail union RMT over funding and said it had already secured financial commitments from union members across the country. 

The RMT has declared it will support a British exit in the inout referendum, which could take place as early as June. Express.

Despite the murder of a young Polish prostitute, Daria Pionko, in Leeds just days before Christmas, a pilot-schemed “red-light” district has been given the go-ahead and will become a permanent feature of the city. Within the Holbeck region of the city, prostitutes will face a substantially reduced likelihood of arrest for loitering, soliciting and kerb crawling between 7AM and 7PM while complying with some specific rules. The reason for the City Council’s decision is that efforts to reduce the incidents of prostitution over the last 10 years have failed and, in the interests of the safety of the prostitutes it is thought that this is the best approach. When those who (ab)use women working as prostitutes were asked if having their name and picture made public, if being given a criminal record or a fine, or if being added to the sex offenders register would deter them from buying sex, 80-85% confirmed that it would. Christians at risk Please sign our petition In the House of Lords, UKIP Peer Lord Pearson of Rannoch’s query whether reading the Bible in public would soon be classified as an anti-Muslim hate crime was dismissed as fanciful.  But only last year street preacher Mike Overd was convicted of a public order offence after quoting an allegedly ‘homophobic’ verse from the Bible.  This was in response to a direct question from a self-identifying gay … who asked his opinion. The Government’s proposed counter extremism strategy to tackle Islamic terrorism defines as extremism anything that conflicts with our newly defined British values.   Under these measures, therefore, anyone expressing Biblical teaching could potentially be labelled an extremist and be subject to arrest.
