The only EU now on offer
is one that is destined to become a United States of Europe, in which all member
states would cease to exist as separate independent nations. (Indeed, that is
more or less what has happened already, apart from defence and foreign policy,
which remain national, well, ‘national, sort of’.) And the only way for an EU
member state to avoid that fate – the fate of becoming a state in the future
