Ben Foakes, on debut, led the fightback and England were on a very respectable 321 for 8 at stumps. The first session today saw Foakes complete his century.
England's attack was in awesome form in that session on Day 2, plundering four wickets at the top of the order with well-merited victims for each of: Leach, Curran, Anderson and Ali.
(Leach impressed in only his second test.)
Curran had been preferred to Broad - and did not disappoint.
With Sri Lanka scheduled to bat last on a crumbling pitch, it seems that rain alone can prevent England taking a 1 - 0 lead in the series with so much time left in the game.
But then, England were in dire straits, yesterday. They recovered - so, can SL do the same? - I really cannot see it.
