Compassion

Dear Friends,

Our world is facing an unprecedented food crisis.

Even before the war in Ukraine, food insecurity was reported in many of the countries and regions where Compassion works, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Togo, Haiti, and Southwest Asia.

Before the pandemic, 135 million people were severely food insecure. Today, it has doubled to 276 million. More than half a million people are experiencing severe, prolonged hunger, resulting in widespread and acute malnutrition. According to the United Nations, this is an increase of 500% since 2016.

Families living in poverty are disproportionately affected, leaving children at risk of severe malnutrition and vulnerable to exploitation as people and communities face desperate choices to feed their families. The families of sponsored children are being impacted by skyrocketing food prices and our church partners are feeling the pressure to meet the emergency needs of the children and families in their care.

At a recent board meeting, Compassion UK trustee Richmond Wandera, a Ugandan pastor and graduate of Compassion’s programme, shared with me:

“Families can no longer afford food. Families can’t afford rent. The necessities have become impossible to afford.

“Now, because of drought, because of the rising cost of living, families in Uganda are sleeping outside their homes in their gardens to protect their crops from being stolen during the night.”

This is how your donation will help

We work with more than 8,500 local church partners all over the globe and each partner is trained to identify malnutrition and hunger as well as take immediate action to address it.

Your donation of:

  • £54 could provide food packs to feed a family of six for two months.
  • £81 could provide food packs to feed a family of six for three months.
  • £135 could provide food packs to feed a family of six for five months.

We are also working with our church partners to provide long term sustainable solutions – like the provision of seeds, fertiliser, livestock, and training on how to build and maintain home gardens and small-scale farms.

The rising cost of living is a global issue, and I understand you may not be in a position to donate at this moment. But you can still contribute powerfully. Please join us in praying for this food crisis to end.

Please pray for an end to this crisis

Please stand with Compassion and our church partners as they support children and families facing severe food insecurity, and for God's mercy and His provision. You can find the heartfelt prayers of our colleagues from across the world as well as guidance on what to pray for specifically on our prayer post on global hunger.

Yours in Christ,
