On a regular rota basis, Mrs Blogger and I go to help out at the local food bank.
It is quite an experience.
I had always applauded the idea but with just a few reservations. (Those mainly concerned what % were scamming people's generosity?)
Having been doing this for a number of months, I can now declare that I don't care any more.
The only residual concern perhaps being that by providing food, we may release monies for misuse with: drugs, gambling, smoking and alcohol abuse.
Even there, I don't bother over much now. People still have to eat. People still have to survive. As Christians we are duty bound to help.
The really good news is that the vast majority of food parcels are indeed going to those who both need and deserve them. Are you having worries about donating to food banks? - Then don't have. Just give.
The most irritating cases for me are those concerning people who actually have a job and yet cannot afford to eat. That makes my blood boil! Prepared to work and unable to live. Good gracious. What will happen to these individuals and families when the really tough fuel bills arrive?
The druggies and alcos are largely well-mannered and generally a pleasure to talk to. If you believe about 70% of what most say when chatting - you are probably on the right track.
A Citizen's Advice rep is usually with us to try to help those who are trying to turn their chaotic lifestyle into something more organised.
These guys do their utmost to help those who struggle with life. They assist too, those who simply cannot cope with the demands of a complex, modern society.
A large % of our clients have just fallen through the cracks. If this has been, to some extent, their own fault - well, what does it matter?
Some are Ukrainian refugees - most are truly great people who are on their uppers.
People are needing help - we are overjoyed to be involved in ensuring that they get it.
