Broad Churches?

SIR – When Tory MPs insist that the Conservative Party should be a “broad church” (Letters, July 7), does this mean having some MPs on the Left, some in the centre, and some on the Right? If so, this is why they lost the election.

Few people vote for a “broad church”. Most vote Labour to go Left, Liberal Democrat for somewhere in the middle, and Conservative to go Right. Greens vote with the environment in mind.

People who previously voted for the Conservatives in large numbers did so because of a manifesto that promised Right-wing policies – which were clearly not delivered.

Those “broad church” Conservatives criticising MPs on the Right are obviously in the wrong party.
