SIR – Although we have a new Prime Minister, the Government still intends to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, without the consent of the Chagossian people (“Chagossians urge PM to axe island giveaway”, report, July 26).
This is an outrage, especially given that the UK forcibly removed the Chagossians to build a military base on Diego Garcia.
Sometimes one feels that the colonial attitude is alive and well in the UK. Even a leader from working-class stock, with an Oxbridge education, seems unable to perceive an injustice when it is staring him in the face. Nor apparently can the government lawyers who work for him.
