Liam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, said in response to comments from the government’s child poverty adviser Alan Milburn that the Government should ‘come clean’ and admit that it ‘will not meet its child poverty target’. (Labour website.)
This is a scam! The whole 'child poverty industry' is a sham. The children allegedly 'in poverty' have generally got far more than I ever had as a child in the 50s. Leftwing solutions to non-existent problems are extremely problematical.
Any child living in appalling conditions - and there are massive numbers who do - are doing so because of atrocious parenting. Select from this list: smoke, drink, gamble, take drugs, buy designer clothes, buy Nike trainers, buy plasma TVs, buy 'on tick', no dads, many 'uncles', subscribe to SKY, abuse credit cards, do not shop intelligently, fail to cook, rely on takeaways.
For all these awful problems, Labour and the rest of the left want to throw extra money into such households! Occasionally - as a radical alternative - they will mutter incoherently about 'the need for education'.
Child poverty? - Hardly. Child ABUSE? - Oh, yes!
