UKIP: The Bandwagon Continues To Roll And Gather Pace!

Local by-elections round-up
There was only one Council election above parish/town council level this week with a UKIP candidate, but the Party did take 35.7% in the Silverdale & Parksite ward of Newcastle-Under-Lyme Council.  The result was: Lab 386, UKIP 254, Con 58, TUSC 14.
But there were two wins for UKIP on the night (possibly three – I’m told there may also be one in the Isle of Wight) after winning by-elections to Madeley Town Council and Stirchley & Brookside Parish Council.  New UKIP councillor Ryan Laing beat the ‘independent’ (Conservative standing as an independent) candidate by a margin of 331 to 206 in Woodside – an incredible 61.4% of the vote.  This is I believe a record for a by-election (but of course not a record for any Council election – at the recent County Council elections Pete Reeve took almost 67% of the vote in Ramsey in a 4-horse race).  Meanwhile Lynda Hogger, the UKIP candidate in Brookside, took ‘only’ 57.9% of the vote – beating her Labour councillor opponent by 442 to 332.
