Large mobs led by Buddhist monks attacked two churches in Galle district
as believers gathered for worship on Sunday. Protesters claimed the Christian
presence in the small coastal town of Hikkaduwa, just north of Galle city, was
‘illegal’.
Police had been stationed outside the churches following threats of
violence made to their pastors the previous night. Yet, TV footage of one attack

The two churches attacked were an Assemblies of God church and Calvary
Church. Both buildings were badly damaged as stones were pelted at them and
