A couple of years ago, I discovered that vine tomatoes
actually tasted like a tomato should - and they even had that greenhousey smell
- so I switched to buying them.
Today - more often than not - just having a bit of
stalk attached does not prevent them from being utterly
tasteless.
Well, is it me? - Are my tastebuds losing their effect
as I grow older? - Not so! In Spain, where I regularly sojourn, market-bought
toms always taste of tomato - as do quite a few of the supermarket
varieties.
I got to thinking about what is else losing flavour in
our brave new world - and high on the list is eggs, even when bought as
'free range'. You get just enough decent eggs to be able to tell that there
really is a difference!
Are there any other things losing flavour? -
Certainly, I would add teabags to that list along with most
bacon.
