Advice on Balance In Church Music.

Unless a church has a preponderance of young people, all modern music in a service is contraindicated. The same applies with Moody & Sankey hymnals unless the vast majority are quite aged. (But do be prepared for closing down.)
If a Church has a very mixed age congregation and wants to attract all ages, three types of music are suggested:
1) A selection of the very best old hymns - a minimum of  one per service.
2) More than one from Mission Praise or similar which tried successfully to modernise worship some years ago.
3) Modern praise songs (preferably not ones which are suitable for individuals but unsuitable for corporate worship!)
There are far too many which are weak in lyrics, musically insignificant and generally tedious. These need to be excised and being selective is essential. There are a number of excellent modern songs out there, but frankly, far too few.

Balance is the key. Fail to achieve this and there will always be members of your congregation who will be made to feel alienated - it is inevitable that they will consider moving on!
