Shock at colossal waste of £33billion each year on Brussels red tape
EU RED tape costs Britain £33billion a year, a report claimed yesterday. The Open Europe think-tank also found that the costs of a quarter of these regulations outweighed the estimated benefits – but they were all signed off by the Government anyway.
These included the Temporary Agency Workers Directive and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
The total cost of these rules is so large that they exceed Treasury estimates for all the revenue to be raised in Council Tax for the 2014-15 financial year.
The analysis adds further weight to the Daily Express crusade for Britain to quit the European Union.
It also shows that unless the UK leaves the EU it will never be fully free from the shackles of Brussels.
But Open Europe warns that one proposed alternative to Britain’s EU membership – the so-called Norway option – would leave most of the regulations in place with the UK powerless to change them. Express.
