IN
the debate on the place of Christianity in modern life in the UK, I speak as an
atheist. Nevertheless, I do acknowledge the following fact. It is that all that
is best in British law, British culture and British traditions, stems directly
from the Christian ethics as preached by Christ.
Therefore,
all the customs, celebrations and ceremonials that remind us of this fact,
should be vigorously maintained. We lose these reminders at our
peril.
