An England team, captained officially for the first time by Buttler, was soundly beaten by an Indian eleven which thoroughly outplayed an England side containing no overlap from the recent test matches.
That had to be stated at the outset as I do not wish to sound as if I am making any excuses. Chasing 199 to win, England batsmen fell short by 50 runs and that was a fair margin.
The problems were how the pitch had changed from when England had bowled to when India did so.
Again, let me state that England's bowling over the first ten or eleven overs was way below par but then they rallied as the hugely out of form Chris Jordan bowled superbly. (At one point, India had looked on for an eye-watering target of 240+.)
As evening drew on, atmospheric conditions changed as did the way the surface of the pitch was playing. The Indian bowlers were awesome and the ball was swinging and seaming. The hapless England batsmen were soon in very big trouble.
An odd game in so many ways but - really well played Rohit and co!
