Long, Long Ago When I Was A Chairman of Magistrates ...

... JPs were granted the power to confiscate the cars of uninsured drivers.

It would be nice to know what % of cars belonging to this class of anti-social beings have been so confiscated.
My bet is that the figure will be a tiny fraction of 1% of that total.
I cannot recall a single instance of such action being reported in the Sheffield Star.
Is this the fault of magistrates? - Probably not.
So-called 'guidelines' are issued which will make this course of action almost impossible to apply.
Police actions confiscating uninsured vehicles are a little better handled:

22,594 vehicles.
From January to mid-June this year, more than 22,594 vehicles have been confiscated by the police from motorists driving on UK roads without insurance.
Police however, are only scratching the surface of the problem as they are only confiscating around 4% of the cars being driven uninsured. Targeting the other 96% would be a big boost for police forces - especially if they were permitted to keep the sale costs for increasing their manpower.
Let us drive this appalling, irresponsible offence from our roads. Leeway must be given for mercy to be applied in that not insignificant number of cases where insurance companies have demonstrably not issued renewal notices and similar.
