It is now almost 30 years since the then Prince Charles sparked a veritable firestorm by signalling that as king, he wished to see a fundamental shift in the relationship between Church and Crown.
In a famous television interview, he suggested that he would prefer to drop the time-honoured ‘Defender of the Faith’ title which as head of the Church of England, all monarchs since Henry VIII have held.
Instead, mindful of the multi-faith nation the United Kingdom was already becoming, he would rather be known as ‘Defender of Faith’ - a protector of all religious beliefs.
