An ‘uncooperative’ red squirrel was rescued from a manhole cover after firefighters threw a scarf over its head.
The bedraggled red squirrel was found by a woman in the city of Dortmund, Germany, on a walk on Monday.
The animal had managed to jam itself inside a hole in the steel cover, with only its head sticking out.
“It was stuck tight and couldn’t move forwards or backwards,” a fire department spokesman confirmed.
The woman’s initial attempts to come to its aid ended in failure, as the panicked squirrel tried to bite her any time she approached.
She instead called in a fire crew and covered the creature in a scarf in an attempt to calm it down. DT.
