Everyone should be free to practise their faith without fear
Hi, Just over a month ago, hundreds of people stormed a Christian colony in Jaranwala city near Faisalabad in Pakistan. Up to 25 churches and chapels and hundreds of homes were ransacked and set on fire. Why? Two local Christian residents, Rocky Masih and Raja Masih, had been accused of blasphemy. Mobs, stirred up by reports that the men had desecrated religious scriptures, attacked the colony, demanding to execute the two men themselves. Rocky and Raja were subsequently arrested and charged with insulting Islam and defiling the name of the Prophet Mohammed. Other Christians in the area have fled in fear of their lives. Sadly, blasphemy accusations against Christians and other religious minorities are commonplace. Pakistan’s blasphemy laws criminalise anyone who insults Islam, and anyone found guilty of committing blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed faces the death penalty or life imprisonment. As the law is poorly defined and has low standards for evidence, false accusations are often made to settle personal disputes or to target religious minorities. We, at CSW, are raising these false blasphemy cases with decision-makers at the United Nations, the European Union and UK Parliament so that the laws are not weaponised against religious minorities. We are also calling on those in power to challenge the Pakistani authorities to repeal the blasphemy laws in the long-term. Your gifts make a difference. Please make a special gift today to help Rocky, Raja and all those suffering for their beliefs around the world. Thank you for your kindness. Cecil |
