He worked very closely with Thomas Cranmer to basically create/spearhead the Protestant reformation in England - Cromwell the secular, Cranmer the priest. He brought the first English translation of the Bible! He held to Protestant beliefs way after it was safe to do so, after Jane died and Henry was swinging back to Rome (hence, the Cleves match, to prevent that.) If he chose his religious beliefs only for convenience, he would have dropped the Bible project, Cleves, and a bunch of other initiatives he had going. He was, in fact, a little reckless about it.
