Thomas Cromwell - A Great Protestant Christian - Much Maligned By Those Who Endorsed Roman Catholic Corrupt Practices.

Where did the story come from that Thomas Cromwell’s beliefs were not sincere?

His Protestant beliefs. There’s this question/story out there for a long time about whether or not his Protestantism was genuine.

But it very clearly was. His modern biographers have picked upon this.

But you don’t even need to read those! He worked for the Cleves match b/c Cleves was Protestant, and he was reluctant to give it up for that reason. He worked very closely with Thomas Cranmer to basically create/spearhead the Protestant reformation in England - Cromwell the secular, Cranmer the priest. He brought the first English translation of the Bible! He held to Protestant beliefs way after it was safe to do so, after Jane died and Henry was swinging back to Rome (hence, the Cleves match, to prevent that.) If he chose his religious beliefs only for convenience, he would have dropped the Bible project, Cleves, and a bunch of other initiatives he had going. He was, in fact, a little reckless about it. One of the charges against him, and the only true one, was heresy - he didn’t believe the Eucharist was flesh and blood, and genuinely could have burned for that! Reddit.

Blogger: I have little time for the late Hilary Mantel but her research into Thomas Cromwell rightly overturns centuries of anti-evangelical propaganda. Wolf Hall and beyond.
