The Hasmoneans were a priestly family who became the rulers of Judea during the Hellenistic period. They rose to prominence after leading the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE, establishing an independent Jewish kingdom. The Hasmonean dynasty ruled Judea from around 140 BCE to 37 BCE, initially as semi-autonomous leaders under the Seleucids and later as a fully independent kingdom.
