Spring blossom arrives briefly and is soon gone, scattered across lawns, decorating garden paths and spilling onto pavements almost as quickly as it appears. Unlike the long stretch of summer perennials, this is a season of short bursts and moments. And yet it is precisely this fleetingness that gives it its poignancy.

And thanks to an ideal mix of hot and cold weather, we are currently in the throes of just such a turn, with many of Britain’s blossoming trees – everywhere from Harrogate’s The Stray to Holland Park’s Kyoto Garden – now at their prettiest peak.
