At 110, Viola Brown credits faith for helping her through wars, pandemics and segregation.

Viola Roberts Lampkin Brown has survived the worst of times.

When the “Titanic” sank into the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, she was just an infant. She was not yet 3 when World War I began. She was still 6 when the Flu pandemic started in February 1918. And by the time she was 7, Brown was working as a domestic with her family in Clarke County, Virginia, and would spend decades living through segregation.

Brown, who was born on Oct. 4, 1911, survived it all to celebrate her 110th birthday on Monday, and even though she is now one of the oldest people in the world and is unvaccinated, she’s trusting in God to keep her through the COVID-19 pandemic, the deadliest disease event in U.S. history.

Her birthday on Monday pushed her into an exclusive club of older adults who are at least 110 years old, known as supercentenarians. And she credits her faith in God as the source of her longevity.

“He wakes me up in the morning. He tells me what to do. I don’t worry about things,” Brown said in a late evening interview with The Christian Post from her home in Berryville, Virginia, where she outlived two husbands — a deacon and a pastor — as well as her son.

There are only 17 people in the world who have been verified as older than Brown, according to the Gerontology Research Group, and all of them are women. That’s why The Clarke County Board of Supervisors proclaimed Oct. 4 as Viola Roberts Lampkin Brown Day.

“Over the course of more than a century, Viola Roberts Lampkin Brown has witnessed Clarke County's progress and growth, which reflects the growth of our nation, and she has made extraordinary memories that are woven into her unique narrative of American history,” the proclamation signed by Board Chairman David Weiss said. “Centenarian Viola Roberts Lampkin Brown, who still lives in her Josephine Street home where she maintains a daily routine that includes spiritual reflection, now joins a small but extraordinary group of individuals known as supercentenarians.”

Brown’s nephew, Andrew Roberts, who adores his great-aunt for her infectiously inspiring lifestyle, says he, too, believes her longevity stems in part from her exemplary life of faith, which he compares to the “saints.”

“My personal experience has been nothing but love and joy whenever I’m in her presence. There’s never one minute that Jesus doesn’t drip off her lips. It’s as if she embodies Him. Everything she talks about and does, she gives honor and praise to God. I mean everything. She’s a literal [believer],” Roberts told CP.

“I think one of the things, in terms of her longevity, has to do with her faith. The lifestyle [she practices]. She doesn’t let a lot of things bother her. She has great capacity either to tolerate stress or just kind of eliminate it for the most part because she is centered. She’s centered on something greater than herself,” he added.

Roberts, along with Brown’s 79-year-old daughter, Vonceil Hill, her only living child (she had two), agree that her faith kept her in such perfect peace, she never needed prescription drugs until she was 101.

“She never took any prescribed medication until she was 101,” Hill explained in an interview with CP. “They put her on a low dose [medication] for high blood pressure.”

Before that, Brown lived on a steady diet of Scripture, and food including green beans, potatoes and tomatoes she grew in a garden she tended until she was about 100. CP.

After being touted as the most pro-life US president ever, Donald Trump believes his successor to be the exact opposite. 

Speaking to CBN News, Trump questioned how any Catholic could support Joe Biden because of his strong support for abortion. 

"If you look at his policies, and if you look at what he's doing to religion, and organized religion, if you look at what's going on, I don't know how the Catholic Church can be supportive of him," he told the broadcaster.  CT.

England's Most Self-Obsessed Poet.

You read the title of this piece and immediately, a well-educated person will list half a dozen names.

Not many, I would warrant, are going to put Tom Hardy at the top of their list.

                                                               

Thomas Hardy, novelist and poet, was a man whom I had the misfortune to have to study in my English Literature at 'A' level.

Adulterer and moralist both - (?) his works across the two genres have occasional solid moments but far too many which echo a particularly cheesy and cloying episode of Eastenders.

The mourning poems for his wife Emma, whom he had treated so very shamefully and shabbily for the bulk of their marriage, speak considerably less of repentance than of a wallowing in unadulterated self-indulgence. For Hardy, whose hatred of God was legendary in any case - repentance was an impossibility.

You must almost think of his most infamous tearjerker, Tess of The D'Urbevilles as being from the same mould as one of the rather more honeyed and cloying films of Doris Day and Cary Grant back in the fifties. It had promise and potential but was ruined by the never-ending efforts to work the readers' feelings into a maelstrom of naked sentimentality.

Is it not ironic that Hardy was perceived as someone who 'worked for the emancipation of women'?

Worst still was his final novel, Jude the Obscure, which has the kind of ending almost calculatedly designed to turn the stomach in just the same way as a fourth rate slasher movie might attempt today. Such was the adverse reaction of his readers upon its printing - he was never again to write another novel.

At times, in Far From The Madding Crowd - as one example - we get to see the kind of great novelist he might have become. 

But witness the first sixty or seventy pages of Return of The Native and the victim-reader is subjected to a description of the local heath! Certainly, in my library edition it was a full seventy pages of the aforementioned self-indulgence. Unbelievable - although I once mentioned this to an English teacher who claimed to have enjoyed this abuse of her time and intelligence. (There is no accounting for what a degree in English can do to the brain.)

In The Mayor of Casterbridge - the idea of a man auctioning off his wife is certainly engaging and his use of time-out-of mind traditions, local folklore and capturing a snapshot of an era in Hardy's Wessex  so soon to be consigned to history with the onset of World War One. These all deserve a certain degree of praise. He has to be allowed some leeway.

Throughout the poetry, his debilitating nihilism, insistent atheism and rampant narcissism tended to ruin whatever had any degree of potential. The liberals of his day welcomed his work with open-armed joy as they deemed it to be a kind of iconoclasticism which they were so desperately anxious to embrace.

I will allow him some praise. The Man He Killed, a poem from 1902 - and surely his best - filled the soul with true emotion rather than the customary, tedious emotionalism.

The campaign to demonise and delegitimise Israel has recently moved into a higher gear with the increased use of one particularly vicious falsehood.

This is the claim that Israel is an apartheid state.

The claim is as fatuous as it is pernicious. Apartheid was the name given to South Africa’s systematic oppression of its black inhabitants who were denied political, civic and human rights.

By contrast, Arab Israeli citizens have fully equal rights. They study in Israel’s universities; enjoy Israel’s beaches and parks; receive equal treatment as patients in Israel’s hospitals and work there as doctors and other medical staff; serve as members of the armed forces and as judges; and are represented by members of Knesset who are currently lynch-pins in Israel’s governing coalition.

Those Arabs who live in the disputed territories don’t have Israeli rights — for the very good reason that they aren’t Israeli citizens. They have no civic entitlements purely because the status of those territories remains unsettled as a result of Palestinian Arab rejectionism and violence — and because Arab states regard them as a nuisance preferably to be ignored.

The “Israel apartheid” smear, however ludicrous, isn’t new. It has its roots in the infamous 1975 “Zionism is Racism” UN resolution. Although that was revoked in 1991, it was resurrected at the scarcely-less infamous UN conference in Durban in 2001.

At that anti-Jewish hate-fest, the NGO forum referred to “Israel’s brand of apartheid and ethnic cleansing methods” to justify advocating “a policy of complete and total isolation of Israel”. This spawned the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and launched a propaganda campaign against “apartheid Israel,” resulting in grotesque campus “Israel apartheid” weeks.

But while this particular smear has a long history, its deployment has recently ratcheted up.

A week ago, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) called Israel “a violent apartheid system.” Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) called Israel an “apartheid state,” as did Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in May.

That month, Rutgers University hosted an Israel-bashing teach-in spewing Hamas propaganda. Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of Democracy for the Arab World Now, told the meeting that Israel’s image today had a “very clear focus on the apartheid, on the ethnic cleansing, on the land theft, on the war crimes, and over the past 10 days the indiscriminate and deliberate bombardment of the population in Gaza”.

In the same month a teachers’ union, the United Educators of San Francisco, called on the Biden administration to end all aid to Israel because, the union claimed, this involved “directly using our tax dollars to fund apartheid and war crimes”.

In June, John McDonnell, the British Labour Party’s former deputy to the party’s ousted hard-left leader Jeremy Corbyn, made a speech to a pro-Palestinian rally in London in which he repeatedly referred to Israel as an “apartheid” state, and called on bankers and the City of London to “stop funding the apartheid regime in Israel”.

This week, the Labour Party’s conference — while congratulating itself for seemingly drawing a line under the appalling anti-Jewish activity in the party under Corbyn —passed a motion accusing Israel of “practising the crime of apartheid as defined by the UN” and urged support for the international trade union campaign to “stop annexation and end apartheid”.

The “apartheid” smear was given fresh impetus in April by a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report entitled A Threshold Crossed: Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution.

This claimed that Israel had “demonstrated an intent to maintain the domination of Jewish Israelis over Palestinians” in Israel, the “West Bank” and Gaza, coupled with “systematic oppression” and “inhumane acts”. “When these three elements occur together, they amount to the crime of apartheid,” it said.

HRW’s obsessive slanders and falsehoods about Israel are its stock-in-trade. But as NGO Monitor has observed, over the previous 18 months at least 15 political non-governmental organisations (NGOs) involved in anti-Israel advocacy, as well as their UN allies, issued publications accusing Israel of “apartheid”.

In January, the Israeli NGO B’Tselem, which has developed from campaigning against Israel’s alleged human-rights violations to challenging the legitimacy of Israel’s very existence, launched an international campaign under the headline, “A regime of Jewish supremacy from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea: This is apartheid”.

As NGO Monitor commented, B’Tselem’s rights advocacy has been replaced by a new strategy of lobbying against Israel in Europe and the United States while forming partnerships with repressive regimes to demonise Israel at the United Nations.

HRW and B’Tselem are repeatedly referenced by the Israel-bashers. When Rep. Ted Deutsch (D-Fla.) condemned Tlaib’s “apartheid” remarks, rightly asserting that she was not telling the truth about an American ally, her adviser Rasha Mubarak tweeted that Tlaib had underscored “facts also made by Human Rights Watch & B’Tselem—Israel is indeed an apartheid state”.

And in Britain, the Labour Party’s Israel-bashing motion similarly noted the 2021 reports by B’Tselem and Human Rights Watch “that conclude unequivocally that Israel is practising the crime of apartheid as defined by the UN”.

A further possible linked development is this. In May, the UN Human Rights Council launched a commission that potentially may go even further than previous hostile UN initiatives against Israel. This commission is to investigate, and issue annual reports on, alleged Israeli offences against Arabs not just in the disputed territories but also —just like the HRW report — within Israel itself.

Moreover, its remit goes beyond the usual claims of human-rights violations to include “all underlying root causes of recurrent tensions, instability and protraction of conflict, including systematic discrimination and repression based on national, ethnic, racial or religious identity”.

With the three members of the commission each having a record of hostility towards Israel, this remit has prompted fears that the commission is a stitch-up designed to tar Israel with the crime of apartheid — thus producing a kind of HRW report on steroids and with the imprimatur of the United Nations.

However that commission may develop, there seems little doubt that the recent blizzard of “apartheid” smears is the result of an organised strategy. And it seems likely that the source of this strategy is the Palestinian Authority.

In a speech to the United Nations last week, PA leader Mahmoud Abbas not only stated that “Israel is an occupying power, practising apartheid and ethnic cleansing,” but also made no fewer than five further references to Israeli “apartheid”.

Two years ago, a report by Dan Diker and Adam Shay for the Jerusalem Centre for Public Affairs revealed that the Palestinian Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel was not, as was widely believed, a network of local grassroots human-rights groups advocating BDS to establish a peaceful Palestinian state next to Israel.

It was instead run by the PA in Ramallah to direct, mobilise and co-ordinate global political warfare campaigns with the goal of isolating, delegitimising and ultimately dismantling the State of Israel. The current “Israel apartheid” chorus is almost certainly the product of the latest such campaign.

The “apartheid” libel is a potent weapon because it is unlike claims that Israel is practising genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians that are demonstrably fatuous (the number of Palestinian Arabs has at least tripled since Israel’s creation).

By contrast, the “Israel apartheid” smear triggers emotions of deep anger and disgust among the shallow and ignorant, whose knowledge of Israel is entirely drawn from malicious propaganda that misrepresents the defensive measures of the Jewish state as racist aggression but which they believe as unchallengeable truth.

South African apartheid was a system as unique as it was evil. The “Israel apartheid” libel is an evil that once again singles out the Jews for a unique level of persecution.

Poland's controversial Constitutional Tribunal ruled on Thursday (7 October) that parts of EU treaties are incompatible with the Polish constitution, in a major escalation of the rule-of-law dispute between Warsaw and the EU, which could shake the bloc's legal foundation,

"The EU Treaty is subordinate to the constitution in the Polish legal system ... and, like any part of the Polish legal system, it must comply with the constitution," judge Bartłomiej Sochański said, according to Reuters.

"In Poland the highest legal act is the constitution and all European regulations that are in force in Poland ... must comply with the constitution," Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party said after the verdict was announced.

"This also applies to the judiciary and the European Union has nothing to say here," he told reporters.
