RUSSIA CLAMPS DOWN ON RELIGIOUS OPPOSITION TO WAR IN UKRAINE

15 Jul 2022
A second Russian Orthodox priest is facing criminal charges for opposing Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Source: Forum_18 Oslo, Norway
‘I have committed no crime,’ says Father Nikandr Pinchuk. ‘I am a priest and have the right to denounce evil, regardless of who is involved in the political situation.’
According to Norway-based Forum 18, Father Nikandr described the war against Ukraine as a ‘mortal sin’. He pointed out that the Russian Federation was also purposely destroying Orthodox churches.
He is now under investigation for ‘discrediting’ Russia’s armed forces.
He is the second church leader to face prosecution for opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on religious grounds. It’s claimed the first was Nina Belyayeva, a Baptist and Communist municipal deputy, who has since had to flee Russia.
She denounced the invasion as a war crime which had ‘nothing in common with Christian beliefs’.
She believes she could face a jail sentence of up to 17 years if convicted, and intends to appeal.
Higher authority
As other Communist deputies tried to shout her down Nina Belyayeva spoke out at a municipal meeting: ‘A Christian is not someone who wears a cross,’ she declared, ‘but someone who follows Christ, for whom the word of God – the authority of Christ – is much higher than the authority of the president.’
She later told the Moscow Times: ‘If I kept silent, I would not be able to respect myself. I wouldn’t be a true Christian and human being.’
Other Russian Orthodox priests are also under arrest or investigation.
Google Images
Father Ioann Kumoyarov, was arrested in June for disseminating ‘knowingly false information’ about the Russian military. He’s being held in detention at St Petersburg’s Kresty prison.
And Father Ioann Burdin, was fined a month’s wages for making remarks online and at a Sunday sermon condemning the invasion of Ukraine. He stressed the importance of the commandment ‘thou shalt not kill’. He has now left Russia.
Eight people who quoted from the Bible or used religious imagery in public protests against the war have also been fined for ‘discrediting’ Russian armed forces. Two others have been charged.
‘16,000 detained’
According to one human rights agency, more than 16,000 Russians have now been detained for opposing the war. Even so, clergy and others continue to protest on religious grounds. ‘They often face detention, prosecution, and the loss of their jobs,’ says Forum 18.
The rights group says the Russian authorities have blocked a Christian website recording deaths and kidnappings among Protestant church members in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol.
Despite the clampdown, Forum 18 say small numbers of clergy and others continue to protest.
Pray
Please pray for Christians in Russia who take seriously the biblical injunction to: ‘Speak up for those who have no voice.’ – Proverbs 31:8
Pray for courage and wisdom, and that the voices of those who speak truth to power will be heard in high places.

Peter Is Right SO Often Across A Wide Range of Matters.

PETER HITCHENS: This economic crisis isn't down to war... it's the bill for our Covid panic - just as I foresaw.

PUBLISHED:   6 August 2022
Can we afford to behave as we do? I don't just mean the Government, which has debauched the currency with mad spending. I mean all of us. Are we going to be able to live as we have done or is this the beginning of a major permanent decline in our living standards?
I don't think there has been anything like this since the forgotten crisis of 1931, which brought down the government and split the governing party.
Nobody realised just how bad things had got until a large part of the Royal Navy mutinied against pay cuts, and so forced a panic devaluation of the Pound Sterling. In modern Britain they don't need to cut anyone's pay.
I said: 'Our economy is still crippled, and the overpraised Chancellor Rishi Sunak (pictured), like some beaming Dr Feelgood with a case full of dodgy stimulants, seeks to soothe the pain by huge injections of funny money'
I said: 'Our economy is still crippled, and the overpraised Chancellor Rishi Sunak (pictured), like some beaming Dr Feelgood with a case full of dodgy stimulants, seeks to soothe the pain by huge injections of funny money'
Inflation cuts it, and those who fight for pay rises to make up for it get called wreckers.
I warned clearly in March 2020 that the out-of-proportion reaction to Covid would lead to this crisis.
I said: 'Our economy is still crippled, and the overpraised Chancellor Rishi Sunak, like some beaming Dr Feelgood with a case full of dodgy stimulants, seeks to soothe the pain by huge injections of funny money
'He will get this back from us as soon as we are allowed out again. Just you wait till you get the bill, in increased taxes, inflation and devastated savings.'
And it came to pass, just as I said it would. I needed no magic powers to see this. Anyone could have done the same, including Mr Sunak.
As it began to be obvious even to him, I wrote here back in May last year: 'Most of the people in charge of this country can't remember what inflation is like. I can. And it scares me.'
Now, ridiculously, persons such as the Governor of the Bank of England are trying to blame our problems on the Ukraine War which he says could not have been foreseen – an odd claim since it actually began in 2014.
No doubt our involvement in that war will make things much worse, and I am coming to that. But the main reason for the Western world's plunge into recession is the ridiculous over-reaction to the coronavirus.
I am genuinely unsure what we can do to repair the enormous damage done to work, business, education, health and the national finances.
But may I put in a plea to our leaders, whoever they may be, to stop making a crisis into a catastrophe? It is time to end the Ukraine War before it sets the whole world on fire and wrecks what is left of our civilisation.
Now, ridiculously, persons such as the Governor of the Bank of England (pictured: Andrew Bailey) are trying to blame our problems on the Ukraine War which he says could not have been foreseen ¿ an odd claim since it actually began in 2014

For some reason, the USA has for 14 years now been having a costly arm-wrestling contest with Russia in Ukraine. This turned hot eight years ago and has led to horrible numbers of deaths, and much destruction, in Ukraine itself.
I really cannot see what ordinary Ukrainians will ever gain from it. Nor can I see what interest Britain has in it, apart from our endless, rather pathetic desire to please the USA, which neither notices nor cares.
Yet we pledge billions in arms supplies, so sustaining the horror. The same goes for all the other European nations now preparing for a chilly winter of fuel shortages and raging high prices.
Is there anybody out there with the wit and courage to bring an end to this idiocy? Or, in years to come, as we sit unemployed in our freezing houses eating bread and potatoes, while Ukrainians pick about in the ruins of their 'victorious' country, wondering how to rebuild it, and where all the young men have gone, will we comfort ourselves by saying that it was all worth it?

For anyone who has followed Amnesty International in recent years, its attack on Ukraine for daring to defend itself against Russia and thus “putting civilians at risk” was entirely in character. The organisation that was once a beacon of hope for political prisoners has become a de facto offshoot of Stop The War. It now operates with the same agenda as other groups on the fringes of extreme left politics, pushing the same hardcore anti-Western obsessions (infamously for some time even teaming up with Cage, the British Islamist group) but with more PR success than most. Israel: A Situation Explained With Neither Side Nor Bias. - Wholly Unlike What The Western Media Generally Publishes!

Israel pre-empts further Iran proxy attack.

These are facts you won't read in the mainstream British media

IDF explanatory graphic
Last week, the al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri was assassinated by American forces in his safe house in Kabul. Reaction ranged from congratulatory and admiring to a muted sucking of teeth by those on the wrong side in the war against the west.
On Friday, Israeli forces assassinated a senior member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which it believed to be preparing a deadly attack against Israeli civilians. In retaliation, the terror group started firing hundreds of missiles at Israeli civilians.
What was the immediate reaction of much of the media in Britain and elsewhere? Israel was blamed for defending itself and defamed by recycling Palestinian propaganda.
But of course. It happens every single time. You can write the script as soon as the first Israeli missile lands. You know there will be a total absence of context so that Israeli victim and Arab aggressor are reversed. You know that Palestinian lies will be believed and reported as truth. You know that Israel will be painted entirely falsely as the villain of the piece, as it is year in, year out. You know that untold numbers in the general public will buy into this demonisation.
With events in Gaza over the past couple of days, it’s been the same old story. The BBC and even newspapers supposedly sympathetic to Israel, such as the Telegraph, have been presenting the violence as Israel’s fault — modified subsequently only slightly by including the odd inconvenient fact that they found they couldn’t ignore.
So this is what actually happened, most of which you will not learn from the mainstream British media.
Palestinian Islamic Jihad is an Iranian proxy and takes its orders from Tehran. On the night of August 1, Israeli forces arrested Bassem Sa’adi, a senior member of PIJ, in the disputed territories of Judea and Samaria.
On Gatestone, Richard Kemp provides essential context for this arrest. He writes:
Saadi is the leader of PIJ in Judea and Samaria, and since May last year he has been consolidating his terrorist bases there, bringing together an assortment of other terror gangs including Hamas, Fatah-linked Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
This left PIJ's city strongholds, mainly in the north, largely ungovernable by the Palestinian Authority, with their Kalashnikovs calling the shots and PA security forces afraid to enter. The deteriorating situation contributed much to the wave of terrorist attacks against Israelis that included 19 dead in March and April this year. The IDF and Shin Bet launched Operation Breakwater in Judea and Samaria a few months ago, intensifying counter-terrorism action against this developing threat, and Saadi's arrest was part of that effort.
In the wake of Saadi’s arrest, Israeli intelligence picked up a PIJ plot to mount an attack on Israelis with an anti-tank missile which could have blown up a bus or a train. As result, Israel closed roads and train services in the south while it pressured PIJ to drop this threat, warning that Israel would take action if the terror group didn’t halt its preparations for an attack. The attempt to stop it failed, leaving Israel with no alternative but to take pre-emptive action.
On Friday, while the PIJ leader Ziyad al-Nakhalah was conferring in Tehran with the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Israeli forces assassinated the PIJ commander in Gaza, Tayseer Jabari. By Saturday evening, the Israeli Air Force had also taken out Khaled Mansour, PIJ’s commander in southern Gaza. Another strike killed Rafat al Zamli, commander of the PIJ’s rocket unit.
As of earlier today, the Israeli Defence Forces had struck 139 PIJ targets including terror attack tunnels, military posts, weapons storage facilities and rocket launch sites. Overall around 31 Gazans have been reportedly killed.
At time of writing, upwards of 780 missiles have been fired from Gaza into southern and central Israel as far as the outskirts of Jerusalem. Most have been intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defence system.
About a quarter of these rockets have fallen short into Gaza itself, probably causing casualties among Gazans. Indeed, the Israelis have produced video evidence of one such misfire that they say was responsible for the deaths of Gazan children that have been blamed on Israel. The Times of Israel reports:
Initial reports from Gaza claimed an Israeli strike in the Jabaliya refugee camp had killed seven civilians, including four children. Photos circulating on social media showed seven body bags.
But military officials said the Israel Defence Forces had not conducted any airstrike in the area in recent hours, and that rocket detection systems had shown the rocket launch and then explode inside the refugee camp.
“On our radar, we see the launch and impact and can see it was them failing and hitting themselves,” a spokesman said. A second official added: “We have videos that prove beyond any doubt that this is not an Israeli attack. It has been unequivocally proven that it was a failed Islamic Jihad rocket launch.”
Yet when the Palestinians claimed that Israeli strikes had killed these children, media outlets ran with that as if it were true. The Telegraph story today by Abbie Cheeseman was headlined
Six children killed in Palestine…
Woah! There is, of course, no such place as Palestine. The Telegraph is adopting the Palestinian tactic of waging diplomatic warfare against Israel by declaring  a Palestinian state that has no legal or territorial foundation.
Cheeseman’s story then merely recycles Palestinian propaganda. She writes:
A sixth Palestinian child has been killed as Israel’s escalating cross-border conflict with militant group Islamic Jihad entered a third day on Sunday with the death of a second senior commander in Gaza.
The conflict, which marks the worst violence between Israel and Palestine since an 11-day war in 2021, has killed 31 people, including six children since Israel unleashed a wave of air attacks on Gaza on Friday.
She provides no essential context about the reason for these Israeli strikes.
She makes no mention of the Israelis murdered by PIJ in March and April.
No mention of Iran’s involvement.
No mention of PIJ’s rockets falling short into Gaza.
No mention of the Israeli video showing this happening.
Whatever has happened to the once-responsible Telegraph?
In all, Israel says at least nine of the deaths in Gaza have been the result of failed PIJ rocket launches. The New York Times, however, reports that a five year old child, Alaa Qadoum, was killed on Friday outside her relative’s house in Gaza when an Israeli airstrike hit nearby. The paper writes:
An Israeli military spokesman, Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, said Alaa’s father, Abdullah Qadoum, was a senior Islamic Jihad commander, but would not say whether he was targeted in the airstrike. The family would not comment on whether he was linked to Islamic Jihad.
Even in the most precisely targeted airstrikes against military targets, there will inevitably be some civilian casualties. The death or injury of any child in these circumstances is a tragedy, whoever is responsible. But what the western media wilfully misses time and again in its reporting of Israel’s military campaigns are two crucial points.
First, that Israel’s defence forces go to lengths unmatched by any other military force — including the British and American — to avoid civilian casualties.
Second, while Israel targets terrorists and their infrastructure with rare precision and only ever as a defensive measure, the PIJ, Hamas and other Palestinian terror groups in Gaza deliberately target Israeli civilians. That is a war crime — as is also their strategy of siting their missiles and other terror infrastructure within civilian areas, thus using Gaza’s civilians, including their children, as hostages and human shields.
Israel’s enemies also point to the relative absence of Israeli casualties, as if this proves a “disproportionate response”. Not only does this grossly misunderstand proportionality in warfare (the response to aggression needs to be in proportion to the threat, not to the number of casualties sustained). There’s also this. When missiles rain down on southern Israel, the population takes cover in air-raid shelters. In Gaza, the Palestinians don’t build air-raid shelters to protect their people against war. Instead, they build terrorist tunnels from which to launch yet more murderous attacks on Israeli civilians.
This distinction is, of course, lost on the United Nations whose perverted and obsessive animus against Israel cannot be exaggerated. Thus the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland said he was:
deeply concerned by the ongoing escalation between Palestinian militants and Israel, including the targeted killing today of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader inside Gaza…I am deeply saddened by reports that a five-year-old child has been killed in these strikes. There can be no justification for any attacks against civilians.
But he doesn’t seem to have been “deeply saddened” by the hundreds of missile strikes against Israeli civilians; nor by the murder of Israelis by PIJ in March and April.
And let’s not overlook Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur to the “Palestinian territories,” who tweeted:
A short time ago, Israel reportedly accepted an Egypt-brokered cease-fire. PIJ rejected it and unleashed another barrage of rockets, one of which fell in an open area next to the Ashkelon marina.
Let’s hope for a speedy end to this latest outbreak of hostilities. But to the malice of the western media or the UN against Israel, there is, alas, no cease-fire in prospect.

Down At The Food Bank.

On a regular rota basis, Mrs Blogger and I go to help out at the local food bank.

It is quite an experience.
I had always applauded the idea but with just a few reservations. (Those mainly concerned what % were scamming people's generosity?)
Having been doing this for a number of months, I can now declare that I don't care any more.
The only residual concern perhaps being that by providing food, we may release monies for misuse with: drugs, gambling, smoking and alcohol abuse.
Even there, I don't bother over much now. People still have to eat. People still have to survive. As Christians we are duty bound to help.

The really good news is that the vast majority of food parcels are indeed going to those who both need and deserve them. Are you having worries about donating to food banks? - Then don't have. Just give.

The most irritating cases for me are those concerning people who actually have a job and yet cannot afford to eat. That makes my blood boil! Prepared to work and unable to live. Good gracious. What will happen to these individuals and families when the really tough fuel bills arrive?

The druggies and alcos are largely well-mannered and generally a pleasure to talk to. If you believe about 70% of what most say when chatting - you are probably on the right track.

A Citizen's Advice rep is usually with us to try to help those who are trying to turn their chaotic lifestyle into something more organised.
These guys do their utmost to help those who struggle with life. They assist too, those who simply cannot cope with the demands of a complex, modern society.

A large % of our clients have just fallen through the cracks. If this has been, to some extent, their own fault - well, what does it matter?
