When a nation's punishments bear no resemblance whatsoever to the Lex Talionis, not only are they an offence to most of the people, they are also an offence to God. It is not for our so-called do-gooders to effectively 'let people off' unpunished.In Proverbs 17:15 it says: "To acquit the guilty and to condemn the innocent are both abominable to the Lord."
Today the liberal, christian left would claim that, as they want convictions, this does not apply to what they are working to achieve. But convictions where there are no balanced, earthly consequences, fall well outside these parameters.
