Celebrities: Who Needs 'Em?

Regular readers will be more than aware of my detestation of  'the cult of personality' which infects our society. So many people go jelly-legged at the prospect of meeting somebody famous that I despair.
(Although in fairness - I have met Nigel Farage several times so who else would I possibly need to meet?)
In our world 'fame feeds on itself'. The consequence of this is that 'celebs' begin to take themselves far too seriously as if: their fashion tips matter; their opinions carry extra weight; their politics are of significant public concern; their likes and dislikes should affect us or their preference for a specific colour of toilet paper should have us all rushing to change our own.
Either this or live vicariously?
Putting mankind 'on a pedestal' is spiritually dangerous for the recipient of adoration for reasons all too easily discovered in the Decalogue.
