The restaurateur visited London's Brixton Prison to film Behind Bars, a Channel 4 show in which he teaches 12 inmates to cook and sell their Bad Boys’ Bakery produce to businesses on the outside.
However, he said he was disappointed with the prisoners’ lack of work ethic, claiming the lax regime inside gave them no incentive to toil over a stove.
“What I wasn’t prepared for was how easy it was for them in there. I was astounded at the comfort zone they carve out for themselves,” Guardian’s Weekend Magazine/S. Telegraph..
Just what did the man expect? The soft nature of our prison system is hardly a close-guarded secret.
This is why some of us who are/have been acquainted with the setup have complained so vociferously and so long about it.
It barely punishes; is not sufficiently rigorous to deter; lacks justice and does little or nothing to rehabilitate. It is just a fairly comfortable interruption to life. (Okay the company may not be of the best - but hey - nuffink's perfect. Innit?)
