Today (5th
July), a major pro-life rally will take place in Belfast calling for
the protection of unborn children who are diagnosed with severe disabilities in
the womb.
The annual All-Ireland Rally for Life will begin in Custom House Square in Belfast City Centre at 2pm.
It will hear from parents whose children have suffered from terminal conditions, and who believe that better support for families, not abortion, is the answer when unborn babies are diagnosed with severe disorders in the womb.
Proposals to weaken Ireland's abortion laws
A press release on the event, issued by Life Institute, said: “A major theme of this year's Rally for Life is the protection of unborn children with severe disabilities. In Northern Ireland, the Justice Minister David Ford proposes to put forward a consultation that could change the abortion law in Northern Ireland and permit the killing of unborn babies with ‘foetal abnormalities’ and in cases of rape and incest.”
Encourage better care
Bernadette Smyth of Precious Life commented that this proposal would have "devastating effects on mothers and their babies throughout the whole of Ireland".
She added: "Among the thousands of people attending this year’s Rally for Life will be parents whose children had been diagnosed with terminal conditions, to talk about their individual experiences, raise awareness of conditions such as Trisomy 13 and 18 and anencephaly, and to encourage better provision of perinatal hospice care.” .
