Maths Teachers.

I see that there are currently severe problems in the recruitment of Maths teachers. This can be a matter of little surprise. The cited reasons tend to be: government interference, the silliness of many OFSTED niggles with schools, OFSTED moving the goalposts, heavy workloads, inability to discipline et al. That Science teachers are in short supply is even less surprising as practical degrees can find jobs with more money and half the hassle. In my view, English teachers have the heaviest of all workloads. They can often teach 150+ different pupils each week - often more. With work approaching GCSE, the marking can be horrendous. There are all sorts of ways that subject staff can keep marking to acceptable levels - such strategies, however, do not work in English. As a former Modern Languages teacher, I believe that this is the hardest to teach. Workloads are manageable but many pupils find the subject difficult and try to give up. If I had my time again, teaching is the very last profession I would choose.
