Labour is "unaware" of its
own tax avoidance in Oldham

In a shocking revelation last night, Jim McMahon, the Labour leader of Oldham Borough Castle, and candidate in the Oldham West and Royton by-election admitted that he was "unaware" that a company of which he is a director, is part of an elaborate Luxembourg based tax avoidance operation. Presented with the evidence he claimed ignorance of the scheme. But as the Company's House documentation makes crystal clear, he, as a director of the company, Oldham Property Partnerships Ltd has a duty to "prepare the financial statements in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice".
John Bickley, the UKIP candidate said, "Ignorance of the situation is no excuse. In fact it makes it even worse. Mr McMahon takes no financial benefit from the scheme, that I am sure. However, his lack of awareness of this scheme, that has robbed the Treasury of hundreds of thousands of pounds is extraordinary. Particularly as he spends his time hypocritically accusing the Government over austerity, and Labour has campaigns against exactly these kind of arrangements.
