My positives last night were: the failure of Lib Dems to
resurrect; Labour melting down; Tories effectively being given a mandate to get
tough with the EU.
(Trouble is - my experience has repeatedly proved that
Tories are the worst promise-breakers of 'em all.)
If May goes for the EU jugular then the Tories will be
re-elected in 2022.
Another vital factor is boundaries.
Allowing that FPTP is fair (?) the Tories are
regularly under-represented against Labour by 30 seats per average General
Election.
Voting for legitimate boundary changes to rectify the
discrepancy was not possible with a small majority - some Tories would have seen
their seats disappearing and voted against.
With a large majority - no problem - and more seats
for Tories in 2027.
With a big majority down the line virtually
guaranteed.
Labour never to rule again?
