The UK used to be able to promote 'Buy British' campaigns for the promotion of our goods as opposed to assisting those from our competitors.
In the EU, that ability was hugely restricted.
We should now be able to permit BUY BRITISH labels and flags on all goods which originate from these islands and are a minimum of 90% of British manufacture or production.
This campaign would need to be pushed hard by the government with informative TV ads explaining how the nation's prosperity can be enhanced by support for our own workers and businesses.
Let us suppose that 40% ignore this altogether; let us postulate that 40% will occasionally respond; let us imagine that 20% take this vital matter seriously. Think what a difference it would make if this were to cut our imports bill by 10% - or even 5%.
There could even be labels for products with greater, foreign percentage content - a half flag, perhaps?
We are talking about BILLIONS remaining in our economy!
In Spain, Chinese businesses - possibly sponsored by the Chinese government itself - are displacing local goods at an astonishing rate. The damage being done to the Spanish economy is becoming incalculable.
When ordinary folks see the ultra cheap Chinese goods at half the price of Spanish, what else can they do other than buy them?
In the UK, we have seen the effects of Chinese steel dumping on our economy. If we are not careful, we could find ourselves in a similar situation to Spain. Beware!
