Sadly, however - even though the programme took a number of pot-shots at Kaiser Wilhelm as an awful individual - it perpetuated the myth that The Great War was more or less an accident caused by interconnected royal families amongst the principal protagonists.
The war arose from: 1) Wilhelm letting Austria off the leash against Serbia. 2) Wilhelm threatening Russia and 3) Putting into practice the plans that he had possibly been making as far back as the end of the 19th Century for an imperialistic war across Europe.

historians have been portrayed almost as victims, invaded Belgium in

into the war - and seemingly not really caring.
