Blogger: When I was a Chairman of Magistrates and David was Home Secretary he committed a deplorable act against Justice.

I understand that he was behind the effective removal of magistrates' powers to jail disqualified drivers. 

What, in our guidelines, had been pretty much a guaranteed custodial sentence became almost impossible to impose.

This was an atrocity against Justice - not just because of the very seriousness of the offence but because it disgracefully undermined the Law itself. 

The breaking of ANY court order should result in custody if the Law is to be held in respect by the criminal classes.
