SPUC Report.

Dear SPUC supporter,

The text of Kim Leadbeater MP’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was finally published on 11th November, less than three weeks ahead of the vote on 29th November.

Now that we have the details, it is even worse than we thought.

  • The definition of terminal illness in the Bill is broad and could include chronic conditions such as diabetes and even anorexia.
  • It allows doctors to raise the issue of assisted suicide unprompted – which could be highly influential on a vulnerable person.
  • The proposed safeguard of having cases approved by a High Court Judge has been heavily criticised by legal experts, and appears to be unworkable.

We now have just over two weeks to persuade MPs to vote against this Bill.

SPUC has produced a full briefing, laying out the problems with the bill.

Get the briefing

Please contact your MP, asking them to vote against this dangerous bill. You can use our easy online tool to do this. The tool contains template text with these key points and linking to the briefing.

Contact to your MP
Please send this message to your MP, even if you have already written to them. It is important that MPs know about the dangers now we have the text of this bill.

If you have not yet written to your MP, please edit the template to include your own concerns about legalising assisted suicide.

Advocates for changing the law will be bombarding MPs with emotive stories, and we need to respond with our own stories. Most of us will have someone vulnerable in our lives who we would fear for if assisted suicide was legalised and normalised, or have experience of a loved one dying. We need to make sure these voices are heard too.

We are in the crucial last few weeks of this campaign. The numbers in Parliament are too close to call, and every vote counts. Please contact your MP now and tell them to vote down this bill.

With best wishes
Alithea Williams
Public Policy Manager

PS – due to the short time frame, we have not been able to send a paper mailing with the briefing out. However, we are printing copies, so if you need physical copies of the briefing for yourself or to send to your MP, please email orders@spuc.org.uk
