Pastor convicted for blasphemy.
A Christian pastor in Indonesia has been sentenced to two years in prison for blasphemy.
Dedi Saputra, 31, was sentenced in an Aceh province court after judges ruled he had ‘convincingly’ committed a criminal offence under the province’s blasphemy laws.
Saputra, who is a former Muslim, was arrested after being accused of sharing content on social media that was deemed to be blasphemous.
Aceh is the only province in Indonesia permitted to implement Sharia (Islamic law). Voice of Persecuted Christians’ partner for Indonesia, who has supported Dedi, said the authorities in Aceh had failed to uphold an agreement with the national government to maintain religious freedom.
Pray that justice would prevail, and that Dedi would be exonerated and released.
Pray that Sharia will not spread to other parts of Indonesia.
Pray that God will sustain Indonesian Christians in their faith—particularly in the face of opposition and persecution.
