The CofE Is Demonstrably Wrong.

Why the Church of England is wrong to support same-sex marriage.

In a 1998 episode of the BBC political sitcom Yes, Prime Minster entitled ‘Power to the People’, the Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and his predecessor Sir Arnold Robinson refer to what has become known as the ‘politician’s fallacy’. The fallacy in question runs as follows:

‘We must do something.

‘This is something.

‘Therefore, we must do this.’

The reason that this is a fallacy is because the ‘something’ in the first line is insufficiently precisely described. This means that any course of action could fulfil the qualification in the second line - ‘this is something’ - and therefore could be seen as that which must be done.

How the argument should have run is:

‘We must do something that will effectively address problem X.

‘This will effectively address problem X.

‘Therefore, we must do this.’

The politician’s fallacy which I have just described is an example of a wider category of logical error which is referred to in technical terms as ‘a fallacious categorical syllogism’.

A categorical syllogism is a logical argument in three steps in which the conclusion logically follows from the previous two steps. An example of a valid categorical syllogism would be the following argument:

A. A triangle is a plane shape with three straight sides and three angles.

B. X is a plane shape with three straight sides and three angles.

C. Therefore, X is a triangle.

This is a valid argument because since A and B are true, C must therefore also be true. Another example of valid categorical syllogism would be:

A. All philosophers are thinkers.

B. Some philosophers are teachers.

C. Therefore, some thinkers are teachers.

Here again, because A and B are true therefore C must also be true.

A fallacious categorical syllogism, by contrast, occurs when what is stated in the first two steps does not lead to the conclusion drawn in the third step. Consider the following argument:

A. All cats have four legs.

B. My dog has four legs.

C. Therefore, my dog is a cat.

This argument is invalid because although statement B may be true, statement C does not follow since it is not a sufficient definition of a cat to say that it has four legs. There are other creatures (including dogs) that also have four legs. Consequently, the fact that my dog has four legs does not make it a cat.

A second example would be

A. All students carry backpacks.

B. My grandfather carries a backpack.

C. Therefore, my grandfather is a student.

This argument is invalid because it is not the fact of carrying a backpack that makes someone a student and so the fact that my grandfather carries a backpack does not make him one.

The reason I have been thinking about these kinds of arguments recently is because of the development of the Living in Love and Faith process in the Church of England. What is becoming ever clearer as the process continues is that its only likely end point is the Church of England joining the ranks of those other churches around the world who have accepted same-sex marriage.

The reason I say this is because of the dilemma facing those pushing for a liberal sexual agenda in the Church of England, which is that according to the Church’s immemorial teaching, marriage is exclusively between two people of the opposite sex and sex outside marriage constitutes the sin known as fornication. This creates a problem when it comes to blessing same-sex sexual relationships and ordaining those who are in such relationships. This is because from the standpoint of traditional Anglican theology (and of traditional Christian theology more generally) it is not permissible to either bless fornication or to ordain those who are habitual fornicators and those in same-sex sexual relationships must by definition be engaging in formication since their relation is non-marital.

This leaves two routes open for those who support the acceptance of same-sex relationships. They can either go down the route of saying that sex outside marriage is not a sin, or they can say that the understanding of marriage can be expanded to include same-sex relationships.

Although a number of bishops, including the former Archbishop of Canterbury, have made statements which reflect the first approach, I think it is likely that it is the second approach that will eventually be adopted because it is easier to present as indicating that there has been no fundamental change in Church of England doctrine. The Church of England stands where it has always stood, it will be said, holding that the proper place for sex is within marriage, but now it has an enlarged understanding of what marriage means in which two people who love one another can be married regardless of their sex.

The problem with this approach, however, is that it depends on the validity of the following categorical syllogism:

A. Marriage is a loving relationship between two people.

B. A same-sex couple can form a loving relationship.

C. Therefore, a same sex couple can be married.

There are two major difficulties with this syllogism. The first is that the definition of marriage in A makes it very hard to distinguish marriage from other forms of relationship. Thus, a father and a daughter, a brother and a sister, or two monks could be in a loving relationship. If marriage is defined simply in terms of being in a loving relationship, then it could be said that in all three examples the persons concerned were married to each other.

Now, most people, if presented with these examples, would say they were ridiculous and that the people concerned cannot be said to be married to each other. The reason for this is because they hold that marriage involves something more than simply two people loving one another. If this were the case, for example, one would have to say that two people engaging in an affair are married to each other, which would be problematic since the very definition of an affair is a sexual relationship outside marriage.

All this being the case the syllogism as it stands cannot work and therefore cannot be an argument for accepting same-sex marriage.

The second difficulty is that the definition of marriage in A does not do justice to the understanding of the meaning of marriage that the Christian Church and Western society as a whole has held for thousands of years.

This understanding is helpfully summarised by Sherif Girgis, Ryan Anderson and Robert George in their book What is Marriage? They note that the traditional view of marriage, what they call the ‘conjugal view’, sees marriage as a comprehensive union between two people made up of a number of interrelated elements which distinguish it from simple friendship.

First, they write, marriage is traditionally consummated by coitus, the coming together of the husband’s penis and the wife’s vagina, and in this way:

"… Marriage unites persons in their bodies as well as their minds. The bodily union of two people is much like the bodily union of organs in an individual. Just as one's organs form a unity by coordinating for the biological good of the whole (one’s survival), so the bodies of a man and woman form a unity by coordination (coitus) for a biological good (reproduction) of the union as a whole. In choosing such biological coordination, spouses unite bodily in a way that has generative significance, they do not merely touch or interlock. This generative kind of act physically embodies their specific marital commitment."

Secondly,  they declare:

"… spouses unite bodily only by coitus, which is ordered towards the good of bringing new human lighting for world. New life, innocence, is one human good among others but in another sense, it transcends and includes other human goods. Having consented to sharing in the generative acts that unite them organically (as ‘one flesh’), spouses cooperate in other areas of life (intellectual, recreational, etc) in the broad domestic sharing uniquely apt for fostering the all round development of new human beings. Of course, they also cooperate in the tasks of parenting when children do come. Ordinary friendships - the union of hearts and minds embodied in conversations and in various joint pursuits - can have a more limited and variable scope."

Finally, they say:

"... In view of its comprehensiveness in these other senses, marriage inherently calls for a comprehensive commitment: permanence and exclusivity. Like the union of organs into one healthy whole organism, marriage is properly total and lasting for the life of the parts. (Indeed, comprehensive union can be achieved only by two people because no act can organically unite three  or more people bodily.) Again, marriage is uniquely apt for having and rearing children, an inherently open-ended task calling for unconditional commitment. But friendships as such require no promise of permanence ..."

Thus in their view, marriage involves bodily as well as mental responses and a "special link" to children and domestic life, as well as "permanent and exclusive commitment" - three elements that all "converge in, and go to constitute, the conjugal view".

If this is what marriage is then there are insuperable problems with the syllogism supporting same-sex marriage. First, although a marriage is a loving relationship between two people, it is a specific kind of loving relationship. Secondly, this specific kind of loving relationship is one that by its very nature can only be between two people of the opposite sex. This is because, as Girgis, Anderson and George note, at the heart of marriage, traditionally understood, is the one flesh union brought about by coitus, an act involving a man and woman that has by nature generative potential.

It is because this is the case that it is not arbitrary discrimination to say that two people of the same sex cannot be married. It is merely a statement of fact. They cannot be part of a comprehensive union with the act of coitus at its heart. This is why the comparison sometimes drawn between the rejection of same-sex marriage and the prohibition of inter-racial marriage is mistaken. The latter is arbitrary because two people of a different race can form a marital union, whereas the former reflects the fact that two people of the same sex cannot do so.

What all this means for the Church of England’s Living in Love and Faith process is that the idea that the Church can redefine marriage to include relationships between two people of the same sex while claiming that this involves no change, and the Church can still stand where it has always stood, is an illusion. As we have seen, the argument that two people of the same sex who love one another can be married is incompatible with the traditional understanding of what marriage is and involves a definition of marriage that makes marriage indistinguishable from forms of relationship that would be universally recognised not to be marriage at all.

As if this were not enough, the Church of England has always held that the traditional conjugal view of marriage is one that was instituted by God himself at creation. What would therefore have to be established is that this view was mistaken and that we now know that God supports the redefined view of marriage. No one has yet managed to make a plausible case for either proposition.

Finally, all the available social science evidence we have tells us that societies flourish best when children are brought up by their biological parents in a relationship in which their parents are permanently and exclusively committed to each other and committed to the flourishing of their children. This form of a relationship is becoming increasingly rare in British society and so why would the Church of England want to further undermine it by supporting a new understanding of marriage which has no necessary connection to the birth and nurturing of children? CT.

Infant Baptisms Are Unscriptural - That's All There Is To It!

Do baby dedications, infant baptisms produce followers of Christ?

iStock/Sviatlana LazarenkaiStock/Sviatlana Lazarenka

Christian parents want their children to develop into compassionate and devout followers of Jesus Christ. And with that noble objective in mind, some parents have their babies baptized, while others dedicate their infants to the Lord with the hope that baptism will occur when their children are older.

But do these sacred ceremonies very early in life ultimately produce teenagers and adults who follow the Savior whose holy name was spoken over them at their baptism or dedication? CP.

Blogger: the dedication of a child does not contradict Christian principles. Baptisms and Christenings are for people who can confess their faith in Jesus. This CANNOT be a second hand process adapted for babies.

Sadly Accurate.

My Take On The Ukraine Crisis.

I remember saying to a friend two and a half years ago that a negotiated peace should have been reached from the very start of the conflict in Ukraine by using democracy.

Just as there should be a plebiscite to find out what the people of the Chagos Islands desire - there should have been similar in the Russian areas currently under the control of Zelensky.
The British claim to both the Falklands and Gibraltar were both fully validated by the peoples of those nations who were given a vote to express their opinions. Support for staying with the UK was well over 97%.
Just as long as Russians and Russian speakers might have had a voice - there was no sense of valid entitlement that could have been capitalised upon by Putin.
A vote in each of these areas, supervised by the UN and a number of groups would have voted either for independence or reattaching to Russia.
Some may well have opted to remain with Ukraine.
The reason that this sensible option was possibly impossible was twofold:
1) The weakness of NATO - caused largely by the parsimonious antics of assorted EU leaders who apparently believed that America should continuously pour out billions to look after them and gave the lie to claims of EU independence. At the same time, these leaders spent what was effectively American money, wildly, and claimed that the world was 'enjoying a peace dividend'. Now that we have a paucity of military forces and weapons - the lie behind this claim has been fully revealed! Their incompetence has been horrendous!
2) The Extreme weakness of the UN.

Trump is forcing Zelensky towards a negotiating position. The Ukrainians want to hang onto territories that do not naturally attach to their nation and this has hugely weakened the rationale of their negotiating position.
The world should have recognised, long ago, that Putin was going to invade and helped Ukraine prepare.
Putin sheds human blood as if it is a matter of no consequence. (Incidentally, how many NATO nations have actually increased their defence spending since the invasion? - Precious few - if any!)

Trump is trying to stop the deaths. I applaud this.
However, Zelensky is not a tyrant. Putin is. Zelensky now must negotiate as his petulance with the President was self-destructive.

I am lacking in optimism. Attempts to force negotiation may or may not work but must be attempted asap.

They May Look Cute But ...

Regarded By Some As The Worst Poem Ever Written In The English Language. I can see why!

 The Tay Bridge Disaster.

William McGonagall

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv’ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

‘Twas about seven o’clock at night,
And the wind it blew with all its might,
And the rain came pouring down,
And the dark clouds seem’d to frown,
And the Demon of the air seem’d to say-
“I’ll blow down the Bridge of Tay.”

When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers’ hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say-
“I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay.”

But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

So the train sped on with all its might,
And Bonnie Dundee soon hove in sight,
And the passengers’ hearts felt light,
Thinking they would enjoy themselves on the New Year,
With their friends at home they lov’d most dear,
And wish them all a happy New Year.

So the train mov’d slowly along the Bridge of Tay,
Until it was about midway,
Then the central girders with a crash gave way,
And down went the train and passengers into the Tay!
The Storm Fiend did loudly bray,
Because ninety lives had been taken away,
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

As soon as the catastrophe came to be known
The alarm from mouth to mouth was blown,
And the cry rang out all o’er the town,
Good Heavens! the Tay Bridge is blown down,
And a passenger train from Edinburgh,
Which fill’d all the peoples hearts with sorrow,
And made them for to turn pale,
Because none of the passengers were sav’d to tell the tale
How the disaster happen’d on the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

It must have been an awful sight,
To witness in the dusky moonlight,
While the Storm Fiend did laugh, and angry did bray,
Along the Railway Bridge of the Silv’ry Tay,
Oh! ill-fated Bridge of the Silv’ry Tay,
I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed.

News From 2024.

Blasphemy law wielded against Christian in Pakistan.

Police in Pakistan on Sunday arrested a Christian under blasphemy laws as part of his siblings' effort to retaliate against him over a property dispute, sources said.

The arrest came the same day a key government minister admitted on the floor of the National Assembly that the state has failed to protect religious minorities in Pakistan against false blasphemy accusations.

Officers from the Okara A-Division Police Station arrested Chand Shamaun, 26, from his home in Christian Colony in Okara District, Punjab Province, in response to a dispute he had with his siblings over his share in their ancestral house the previous night, said area Christian leader Younis Chauhan.

Chauhan said that he was present with other Christians when Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mehr Yousaf arrived with other officers.

"The police asked us if we knew anything about a Quran desecration incident in the colony," Chauhan told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News. "When we told them that no such incident had occurred, DSP Yousaf told me to take them to Chand Shamaun's house. On reaching the place, the police arrested Chand's elder brother Zeeshan Shamaun, who was sleeping at the time."

Chand Shamaun arrived and he was also taken into custody, he said.

Chauhan said that when area residents asked police why they were arresting the two brothers, Yousaf said they had received information that Chand Shamaun had desecrated the Quran.

"We told the police that though the siblings often quarreled over their share in property, no blasphemy had been committed," Chauhan said. "The DSP assured us that the brothers would be prosecuted under sections 147 and 151 of the Pakistan Penal Code for disturbing public peace, and they could obtain bail from the court on Monday."

A few hours later, however, they were surprised when eight to 10 police vehicles arrived and cordoned off the streets leading to Chand Shamaun's house, he said.

"It was then we came to know that police had registered a First Information Report [FIR] against Chand under Section 295-A [of Pakistan's blasphemy statutes] and Section 9 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997," he said.

Section 295-A prescribes imprisonment of up to 10 years for "deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs." Section 9 of the ATA 1997 relates to "acts intended or likely to stir up sectarian hatred" and is punishable with imprisonment of up to seven years.

Chauhan said that several Christian families upon seeing the police deployment locked their homes and left the colony, fearing that the blasphemy allegation could provoke violent protests by Islamist groups.

"Fortunately, there were no protests in the city, and residents have started returning to their homes," he said.

Chand Shamaun works as an ambulance driver and has two minor children, he said. His brother Zeeshan was still in police custody at this writing. Their family members could not be reached for comment.

Abraham Daniel, bishop of the Baptist Church in Sahiwal, criticized police for registering a false FIR against the Christian.

"The FIR registered on the complaint of a police Sub-Inspector Haider Ali states that he and five other policemen were standing outside the District Headquarters Hospital Okara when Chand Shamaun came there and started shouting that he would burn the Quran because of his differences with Zeeshan and his sister Zunaira, who had converted to Islam some time ago," Daniel told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News.

According to Ali, when the police tried to arrest Chand Shamaun, he fled on foot to Christian Colony, he said.

"I believe that the allegation brought against Chand is based on police mala fide," Daniel said. "They turned a family dispute into a religious incident when in fact no blasphemy had been committed."

He said he regretted that blasphemy laws were being blatantly misused against Christians in Pakistan.

"False blasphemy allegations and cases have become a norm here," he said. "The situation has reached the point where entire neighborhoods are abandoned merely on the basis of accusation. The case against Chand is a cause of concern because the complainant is not a private individual but a police officer who apparently concocted the incident."

'Minorities Unsafe'

Also on Sunday, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said in an address to a special session of the National Assembly that he regretted surging incidents of mob violence against religious minorities in Pakistan.

"Minorities are being murdered daily," Asif said. "No religious minority is safe in Pakistan. Even the smaller sects of the Muslims are not safe."

The minister said treasury members wanted to bring a resolution in the House in support of the religious minorities.

"Our Constitution provides protection to the minorities, but practically we are seeing them being murdered in Swat, Sargodha and Faisalabad," he said. "This is a matter of concern and embarrassment [for the nation]."

One June 20 a mob in the Madyan police station in Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province lynched a Muslim resident of Sialkot. Police had detained Muhammad Suleman for alleged desecration of the Quran. The mob not only killed him but set his body on fire, along with the police station and an official vehicle.

On May 25, a frenzied Muslim mob, including women and children beat a 74-year-old Christian, Nazeer Masih Gill, with stones and sticks after a local rival accused him of burning pages of the Quran. The mob also set fire to Gill's shoe factory and house. He underwent two head surgeries but succumbed to his wounds nine days later, on June 3.

Blasphemy charges were not proven against any of those people, Asif told the House.

"We must ensure the safety of our minority brothers and sisters," he said. "They have as much right to live in this country as the majority. Pakistan belongs to all Pakistanis, regardless of whether they are Muslim, Christian, Sikh, or of any other faith. Our Constitution guarantees full protection to minorities."

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar later read a resolution emphasizing that "the right to life is the most cherished right enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan."

"This House takes serious notice of the recent mob lynching of our citizens accused of offenses in Swat and Sargodha," Tarar read. "It is noted that such incidents have recently increased in different parts of the country."

The resolution further urged the federal and provincial governments "to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, including religious minorities and other vulnerable segments of society."

The National Assembly thus specifically called for "the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab to take immediate and necessary measures to identify, investigate and prosecute those involved in these incidents under the relevant laws."

"Furthermore, the House expressed the expectation that the courts would ensure immediate and speedy justice in these cases, underscoring the need for swift legal action to prevent future occurrences of such tragic events," the resolution concluded.

Pakistan ranked seventh on Open Doors' 2024 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian, as it was the previous year.

Reform: 31% to Be Biggest Party; 33% Will Scrape An Overall Majority; 35% And We Have A Government In Charge.

Reform UK is now within touching distance of the share of the vote needed for Nigel Farage to become Prime Minister, one of his top strategist argues. Millionaire entrepreneur Zia Yusuf claims Reform UK could win a narrow majority with 31% of the vote – and the Politico’s poll of polls now has the party in first place on 27%.

If the party can get “north of 35%” he says it could win between 350 and 400 of the 650 seats in Westminster. In the summer election Sir Keir Starmer’s party won 412 constituencies with 34% of the vote.
He is certain the Labour Government will not succeed in stopping migrants coming to the UK on small boats ahead of the next election.

Zia says: “Our view is it’s actually a very quick and simple problem to solve if you have the political will. The necessary preconditions are you have to leave the European Convention of Human Rights – Labour are never going to do that.

“You have to announce that nobody who comes here illegally will ever be allowed the right to remain. You have to deport people who come here illegally, so you take away the incentive.

“And you obviously stop giving people free accommodation at the taxpayers’ expense. Labour are not going to stop any of those things.”

Pure, Unadulterated Malice!

 Telegraph View.

Labour’s attack on private schools is simple class envy.

Officers in the Armed Forces who receive help to put their children through boarding schools are leaving because costs are now too high

Another Labour policy that will cause far more harm than any improvement to the public finances is the imposition of VAT on independent school fees from next month. This pernicious ideological move has already forced some small schools out of business and is expected to push thousands of pupils into a state sector unable to cope with the additional numbers.
Now another group has found itself in difficulties as a result. Officers in the Armed Forces who receive financial help to put their children through private boarding schools while serving are leaving their jobs because the extra charges are too great. They do not have the option of state education for their children because they can be deployed abroad at short notice.
Some are facing a rise in annual costs of more than £7,000. Even though the Government has offered extra financial support for military parents it is not enough to cover the increase. Officers say the policy will “push valued personnel out of service” and cause a recruitment crisis.
Government officials said Ministers had never promised to cover the full amount of the extra charges but insisted that only a small number of families would be hit. Even if this is true they are personnel the country can ill afford to lose so blithely, and some estimates suggest 2,000 families are at risk. The wife of a lieutenant colonel said the couple and their three daughters were preparing to leave the country. “We will most likely relocate and the UK will lose a competent, well-trained, valuable officer.”
One brigadier said that, from Jan 1, the cost of educating his three children could rise from £40,000 a year to £72,000 – more than his net salary. Labour is pursuing a reckless, small-minded and damaging policy; but for this Government, class envy trumps all other considerations.
Blogger: it actually falls to taxpayers to fund this spiteful act by Labour.
There aren't enough school places for all the former private pupils.
Surrey is having to bus these 'privileged monsters' to other counties to find places.
Almost all private/public schools are winding down their bursaries which help gifted, working class children.
This Blogger hates no human being but he considers our hate-filled Labour Party to be beneath all contempt.
