I Can Answer Her Question - Blair's Government!

SIR – How have we got to the point where the judiciary makes up rules in active opposition to the elected Government?

The Sentencing Council has issued guidance that requires judges and magistrates to take into account the background of criminals from ethnic, religious or gender minorities when sentencing them – a move that Shabana Mahmood, the Justice Secretary, says should be reversed (report, March 6).

For years we have seen judgments that are seemingly not in accordance with government policy, and now we have the judiciary actually making it up as it goes along. The Council suggested that a reason for the guidance is that ethnic minorities are disproportionately represented in the prison population. Has it occurred to it that this may simply reflect disproportionate representation among the convicted?

The Justice Secretary has stated her opposition to the guidance, and there the matter should end. However, she is currently powerless to stop it coming into force. It is well beyond time for this situation to end.

Leviticus 18. It All Seems Pretty Clear. Old Testament.

22 “‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

23 “‘Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.

24 “‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27 for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28 And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.

29 “‘Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people. 30 Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the Lord your God.’

Leviticus 24.

17 “‘Anyone who takes the life of a human being is to be put to death.

No Comment Needed From Me.

Hindu leader calls for rape and murder of Christians, says religious freedom group.

A Hindu leader in Chhattisgarh State, India, has been condemned by for allegedly calling for a violent pogrom against Christians in the state.

Adesh Soni reportedly said that Christian men, women and children should be killed, humiliated and raped.

Soni then called for 50,000 Hindus to take action in three Christian-majority villages on 1 March, according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW).

The stated reason for Christians being targeted is their eating of cows, considered a sacred animal by many Hindus.

Soni’s alleged threats were picked up by Arun Pannalal, President of the Chhattisgarh Christian Forum (CGCF), which works to support persecuted Christians in the state.

Pannalal was accused by Soni of spreading false information. Pannalal denies this and a police investigation into his phone found no evidence that he was spreading false or malicious rumours.

Christian organisations in the region have called upon the government to ensure that Christian communities are protected from any potential action by Hindu extremists.

Chhattisgarh has become an area of concern for Christians. In June last year there was an incident in which a Hindu mob attacked Christian families and gave them 10 days to renounce their faith in Christ. The following month a pastor was also attacked by a Hindu mob.

In India as a whole attacks against Christians have also risen significantly in the last ten years, going from just 127 in 2014, to 834 last year.

Mervyn Thomas, Founder President of CSW, said of the situation: “CSW is deeply concerned by these blatant calls to attack religious minorities, in this instance Christians, in India’s Chhattisgarh State.

"We urge the relevant authorities investigate these claims thoroughly, and if they are found to be true to ensure that Mr Soni and anyone who has supported him faces appropriate legal consequences.

“We also call on local law enforcement to take measures to ensure that the Christians who will be directly affected by what has been said are guaranteed protection." CT.

Dear Friends

Iranian prisoner on hunger strike

An Iranian Christian convert, Nasser Navard Gol-Tapeh, remains on hunger strike in Tehran’s Evin Prison a month after his re-arrest.

The 63-year-old was re-arrested on February 6, the same day as fellow former prisoner of conscience Joseph Shahbazian, an Iranian-Armenian pastor who will turn 61 later this month.

Both remain detained on unknown charges, though there are particular concerns for Nasser, given the length of his hunger strike and the fact he had already suffered with poor health following his previous nearly five years’ imprisonment.

Please pray for his immediate release from prison.

According to Article18 sources, Nasser is protesting against his unjust re-arrest and detention, and insisting upon his immediate release. It is understood that he has been denied the right to a lawyer and has been permitted only a few short supervised calls to his family, in which he has been prohibited from speaking about his hunger strike or any other conditions of his detention.

Article18’s director, Mansour Borji, said: ‘We are seriously concerned about Nasser’s health, as a prolonged hunger strike can have irreversible health consequences.’

Nasser was first imprisoned in January 2018 and was denied medical treatment during his time behind bars. He was finally released in October 2022 after being ‘pardoned’.

Assisted Suicide.

Christian groups call for National Day of Prayer against assisted suicide.

Religious organisations across the UK are uniting for a National Day of Prayer Against Assisted Suicide on Tuesday 25 March.

The initiative, led by The Christian Institute in collaboration with Affinity, CARE, the Christian Medical Fellowship, and the Evangelical Alliance, aims to rally Christians in opposition to proposed legislation on assisted dying.

The focus of the prayer effort is Liam McArthur’s Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults Bill, which is currently under review in committee stage. Deliberations on the Stage 1 report are expected to commence in April.

According to The Christian Institute, the majority of oral evidence presented to the committee has been against the bill.

Ciarán Kelly, the Director of The Christian Institute remarked, “Now is a key moment to pray for the failure of efforts to legalise assisted suicide for ill and vulnerable people.”

The organisations are urging individuals and churches to host prayer meetings at their churches either in person or online, and to spread awareness about the event.

Participants are encouraged to focus their prayers on the following themes:

  • Compassion – Praying for a societal shift toward prioritising care for the sick rather than facilitating their deaths.
  • Clarity – Asking for politicians and journalists to recognise the implications of the bill, particularly its impact on vulnerable individuals and doctor-patient relationships.
  • Courage – Giving thanks for politicians already opposing the bill and asking for more to speak out.
  • Co-operation – Praying for the effectiveness of Christian and non-Christian groups working in Parliament, media and at grassroots to prevent the legislation from passing and expressing gratitude for their efforts thus far.
  • Concern – Seeking that the voices of professionals who oppose the bill will be acknowledged and respected by decision-makers. CT.

Ministers will take employers to tribunal if workers don’t want to sue.

A new enforcement body is to be granted the power to take cases forward on behalf of employees as part of reforms that businesses say will drive up costs

Four in five businesses expect their costs to rise after the government’s workers’ rights reforms, new research suggests, as it emerged that ministers will be able to drag companies through employment tribunals on behalf of employees even if they do not wish to sue.Amendments to a bill going through parliament grant a new enforcement body the ability to take individual claims forward in what lawyers have called a “draconian use of the power of the state”.
It is understood that the 'Fair Work Agency', which is being set up to enforce workers’ rights, would be able to step in where workers are unwilling or unable to bring a claim, if ministers believe there is a case to answer.
The body would also be able to give support and advice, including legal representation, to those who do bring claims against their employers.
Blogger: two points.
ONE: This is going to add to business costs and consequently will see unemployment rise even further!
TWO: I know how unemployment tribunals currently work. I know who sits on them. I know that oodles of rightfully sacked workers win cases at present!
People wonder why so many firms use agency workers and short-term contracts. Well. It is because they truly fear employing people they will never be permitted to sack.
