An embarrassing icon.

Ewan MacColl was a figurehead for the hard left. As a singer, writer, actor, playwright - there was no leftwing cause which he failed to espouse.
He wrote songs praising: murderers, Ho Chi Minh, Fidel Castro and Ernesto 'Che' Guevara.
This extreme leftwinger - the darling of the marxists and the leftist members of the arts movements - was happy to fight fascism - unless, of course, it affected him personally.
In July 1940 Ewan MacColl deserted from the British army in its fight against fascism.
We must choose. Was he a coward or a hypocrite? Was it perhaps a mixture of both?

Perception?
