Whither Common Sense?

I had two troubling conversations yesterday, both on  the subject of common sense.
We rapidly concluded that silly rules in Health & Safety, Employment Tribunals, Courts and MANY other places have gradually been eroding common sense altogether.
We noted that generation by generation, this is being lost. How long before mankind stops thinking at all?
How about the sacking of a teacher who restrained a boy who had assaulted him with a milkshake? What was matter with these Governors? Do they not grasp that they have granted licence to every ne'er-do-well who has a gripe with a staff member in that school?
And so it goes. This is one tiny glimpse at a huge problem.
My generation can often recognise common sense when they encounter it and can even produce some from time to time.
Will future generations - brought up on idiocy and 'right-thinking' even spot it?
