As a linguist by trade, it is difficult for me to overstate the folly in education today of 'diminishing the need for memory'.
'Being able to think logically is what education is all about' is the mantra which has been disingenuously thrust into our faces over three decades, at least.

In practice, the reality is that those who do not possess their own 'bank of knowledge' are considerably less well-equipped to be logical. The 'logic' they then have to use is extremely narrow and has had to be spoon-fed to them which is incredibly restrictive and open to political indoctrination. They simply do not have the mental resources to go beyond the confines of their narrow courses. Few today are capable of 'thinking outside the box'.
When we teach pupils to rely on Wikipedia to fill in the countless gaps, we do them a grave disservice and worse still - we encourage the kind of intellectual stupor which has become prevalent.
You are actually forced to ponder on whether this state of affairs is precisely how liberal left politicians want pupils to be.
The more people use genuine thought processes, the harder it becomes for logic-free, liberal left ideas to survive.
